• Re: Export DNxHD from a P3 Project?

It can very useful going forwards to adopt an ACES workflow for this sort of scenario (if you are on 2021). I'm about to adopt ACES workflows for both Avid and Resolve Studio, even though when I finish it is almost always still SDR rec. 709. My grading monitor is 100% DCI-P3 but is calibrated to rec. 709 currently but the real advantage of ACES

I hear you but at times like this I am reminded of that old ancient philosopher, Seneca, who wrote that anger is about unrealistic expectations. So in a modern sense, the more you honk the horn in a traffic jam, the less it will make a difference over when that jam moves - it'll move when it can - and it will only get you more worked up to no avail

  • Re: 3d models in Avid

I use Fusion Studio for this sort of thing now - a world beyond Avid 3D (though I was kinda fond of that ) - you can then export for Avid. I believe both the free DaVinci's Fusion page and the free Fusion can do this too.

  • Re: processor not fast enough

Doubling the ram will certainly help but the gpu is more probably the culprit here too. That graphics card is simply too old and with too little vram for much serious FX work. Cpu is mainly codec decode encode, e.g playback/playout media; gpu/vram is for realtime fx, e.g. layers of real time fx compositing. The processor warning can indicate a defficiency
I am glad that you are able to work on such high end stations and I am sure it results in great work, but for education markets, developing markets, offline only facilities, etc, there needs to be lower price points which the mini and MBP fill and not every place wants an iMac along with the other monitors.
I

  • Re: Vocal audio levels tips?

Job, you are quite right and I should have pointed that out. In the UK a PPM is still like second nature to us old hands I should also have said that when recording VO with a PPM one would normally peak to 6, my levels reference was to proir standard norms using a PPM in the final mix, for the OP's point about overall mix levels. I use PPMemulator

You're not wrong Telegram I used to be a location recordist and have used/kept hold of them on everything from Nagras to the present digital recorders. They are bullet proof in all weathers and have a signature sound echoed throughout decades of movie history. I have some nice Rode studio condensors too but still prefer these for VO. I've started
It is also usually easier to use some kind of loudness meter than it is to use a peak meter. Loudness meters will measure average loudness over time.
A loudness meter is not an ideal recording meter, where peaks are more important than average levels. The modern loudness paradigm is about mixing and delivery

Like I say David I'm keeping a watchful eye. I'm committed to powerful laptops now, for a number of professional case use reasons such as remote and onsite and I'm not too overawed by HP's latest offerings because they don't offer a compelling upgrade on my fully rigged G5 yet and for a form factor that is surprisingly too small

David, fair play, I understand but Resolve Studio has a ways to go before it is performing fully with M1. I haven't used one but I do have Studio and online/offline broadcast on both Avid and it, up to 4K regurlarly and I can see from BMD's forum that no serious professional finishing bay is using M1 for Resolve at this moment in time. It can
