After updating to the latest 8.7.2 I too have seen that when closing the application it hangs and you have to quite the windows crash notice to finally close the program. Needs looking at.

Not sure about older versions of media composer but all recent ones allow you to mixdown audio with Master Fader effects so you can do a full mix down of your finished audio with all effects applied including compression.
