Regarding the "Range specified for dup is outside range of component" error, I found references to this error in the Readme for the 5.0.4 realease, at which point the issue was reported as fixed. Any ideas? I think I'll start a new thread for this issue to keep this thread from going too far off target. Larry

I created a new project and tested the clip with AMA linking instead of importing, and the banding was NOT there when simply viewing the linked h.264 file directly. This pretty much puts to rest any possiblity that the issue is somehow a display issue. I then tried transcoding the file, but Avid won't let me. When I try, I get the dreaded "Range

Okay -- I did a QT .mov "same as source" export and I see the same issue -- i.e. the bands are still there. What I'm seeing in Avid is what I see in the export, so the issue definitely appears to be part of the video itself once it's imported into Avid. While not entirely conclusive, the evidence tends to point to the input stage as
Larry, Banding is produced when you re-map levels, so as you say choosing a "709" (pleaase change the labelling Avid!) import setting it should not get worse.
Exactly - the 709 setting does not remap, so this isn't (i.e. shouldn't be) where the problem is occurring.
I would not
I've been doing a lot of testing on import vs AMA w/ H.264. Here's what I've discovered so far: Import w/ DNxHD 175x produces less banding then importing (uncompressed) 1:1 ten bit. AMA with Do not modify levels has the least banding by far. I haven't tested how transcodes of the AMA linked files

I'm using 5.5 -- the actual current version is... 5.5.1. Do you remember if this was listed in any release notes? I don't like to change Avid versions mid project, but I will if this specific problem is solved. Thanks, Larry

I'm seeing some banding in smooth color gradients when importing h.264 mp4 files into a 1080p/23.98 project. The original mp4 files do NOT exhibit the banding when I view them in any number of programs, like Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic. The files use 709 color space and are already 1080p/23.98 files, so the appropriate settings
This is probably worth reading
Helpful, but I still can't find the location of the site settings file (the "site" settings file, NOT the project settings file.) Oh well -- it's not mandatory. One other question: When you do a full uninstall/reinstall of Avid MC, do you need to reinstall
Yes Site and user settings like your Projects are left alone with these updates (patches or full installs)
I knew that this was true of projects, but I didn't realize that this was also the case for settings. Just so I can confirm, can you tell me where the settings are stored? I'd feel safer backing

Thanks for all the feedback Andrew. I'm still confused about dealing with "updates" vs "patches" given what the documentations says. Just to get my head around this, say I'm currently using 5.5.2.1, which started as 5.5.1, then had the 5.5.2 "update" applied, followed by the the 5.5.2.1 "patch." It seems
