Re: Film and 24p settings missing? MC 3.5

Did you load you 29.97 bins into your 23.98 project? or did you just import the video file? I Copied my bins - via the avid user folder - (or open the bins) into the the 23.98 project. Create a sequence and when you drop the 29.97 clip, it should automatically add an motion effect (green circle in the middle of the clip). If it does, then you go into Motion effect editor and do pulldown.

Right? Or is it still givinh you the error?

I opened my 23.976 project and went to File}open bin} located the bin and opened.  Is there another way I should do it?

gas, look at lunalobo's specs, he's on MC4 and his worfkow refers to the mix & match feature, not available on MC 3.x; I do not run MC 4 so I can't verify what lunalobo writes, but it is my understanding that in MC 4 You can capture at any given frame rate in the appropriate project, then open the bin with the captured clips from a different project with a different frame rate and use the "mismatching" clips which will have a motion effect applied to bring them to speed. Why not giving it a try as there's the 30 days MC 4 trial?

Holy smacks! You are right! I totally forgot that this feature is on MC4 and not MC3. Yeah, try the trial and see if that'ss work fo you - it has for me and I love this feature, now that I can remove pulldown after the fact.

Re: Film and 24p settings missing? MC 3.5

While I appreciate all the help so far, upgrading to MC 4 (at least beyond the free trial) is just not in my budget right now (another $2,295.00) for something that may or may not work.  When I upgraded to 3.5 for $500.00 or whatever it was, it was strictly to be able to work with Canon's HDV 24p(f) media.  Now I am expected to upgrade again.  So to be certain I am not missing something, the only way to affect pulldown on capture via firewire is 4.0 right?  So at least I know (sort of) that if I have to breakdown and upgrade I will be able to do that.  I don't want mixed timelines, I just want to be able to edit the stuff we shot on the HV30 in 24p in a 24 frame (23.976) timeline.  After 3.5 came out I was finally able to import and work with the stuff shot on the Xh-A1 in a 23.976 timeline.  I really just wish I knew of a third party app that output HDV (.m2t) files (like TMPGEnc) that actually works.  If can capture the entire tape from the HV30 in either HDVSPLIT or in Premiere CS4.  I work in that TMPGEnc, employ inverse pulldown, and create a new .M2T (which appears fairly lossless) that now runs at 23.976.  I can import the original clip into MC at 29.97 but the newly created one (with inverse pulldown) cannot be read by Avid.  It can be read by Premiere at 23.976, but that doesnt really help me.  I took that clip into After Effects and began encoding it with the DNxHD codec but its just not practical.  I have about 90 minutes of footage.  The entire original 90 minutes (broken into 2 files, one 9gb, and one 11gb) is manageable.  However when I output about 9 seconds of that footage and created a DNxHD clip it made a file that was around 150mb and between creation and then import into Avid it took about 5 minutes....FOR 9 SECONDS!.  I'm no math wiz but that would mean that to do this process on the the entire footage, I am looking at about 75 hours of computer time and a file that is somewhere around 100gb?  Is that really my only option at this point?  Jesus I hate my life!  I really should have stuck to strictly being a camera man......

THANK YOU AVID FOR WASTING ANOTHER WEEK OF MY LIFE WITH YOUR INEPT SOFTWARE.  I really hate to beat this drum again but why the hell can CS4 (a much lower priced software) do what this software cannot.  Hell I even remember in Premeire 2.0 then released a patch (for free) that included presets for an HDV project?  You mean they realized their software was lacking and they patched it for free?  Wow Avid....STEP UP TO THE PLATE!

I am dying here folks, what makes an MPEG acceptable to MC 3.5, if I can figure that out perhaps I can get on that works out of TMPGEnc.  I know little to nothing about that format and feel like that is where my issue lies. Anyone Anyone....Bueller?

p.s. you are the best lobo...thanks for all your work here man, I really appreciate you trying to help me with all of this.  kudos my friend!

Re: Film and 24p settings missing? MC 3.5

Thanks, bro. Remove pulldown via firewire? I thought you had already captured it (interlaced) and you wanted to remove pulldown via software (DVfilm, motion effect). removing pulldown via firewire has been available for awhile (even Avid Express 5).

So,  when you create your 23.98 project you have to go into the film/24p settings (settingd tab) and set the right cadence (standard or advanced) and the right pullin (start with A, or B, C, D,or not lock the frame) before you capture via firewire. I don't know what the cadence is for the HV30, so you'll have to experiment.

At least that's what I hope you're saying? If you already tried it, then I'm really at the end of my technical prowess. But, yeah, you have to tell Avid how to handle the pulldown before you capture, not afterward. My workflow was that I had tons of 24p Advanced footage that was captured at 30i (29.97), that the only way for me to remove pull down was open the 29.97 bins into a 23.98 project and use the motion effect editor to remove pulldown.

Now, I just capture and remove pulldown via firewire into my 23.98 project with using the Film and 24p setting first (I still have a a few 24p advance tapes coming in, so I now can remove the pulldown in realtime without the motion effect editor). But I am using a Panasonic camera and not a Canon;(

    Also,I found this

"Once the footage is on tape then you are stuck with the HV30's flagless pulldown so you'll have to use a program like TMPGenc or DVFilm Maker to remove the pulldown. Don't know why Canon made it slightly more difficult to shoot 24p with the HV20/HV30...maybe just so it wouldn't be any more powerful than it already is. I just sold my HV20 and one of the reasons was because of the added processing of removing the pulldown"

So, I guessI didn't help all that much...but I hope you get things worked out - Salud!

See that right there is one of the problems.  I have already captured but am totally willing to do it again.  The problem is, once again I dont have any settings regarding Cadence, remember I only even have film and 24p settings if I set up a 720p 23.976 project, not 1080 project like I am trying to use.  When I open the film and 24p settings I see only what I showed you in that earlier picture I posted.  I don't see any option regarding standard or advanced, nor do I see anything that can be applied during capture.  I'll post a picture showing my settings I see.  Maybe I am missing something, maybe my version of Avid is junked, or maybe I just need to sell my PC stuff, buy a MAC (YUCK) and get FCP.  I have to hear from my buddy the other day, when discussing my problems, how easy it is for him to import off an HV30 into a mac, remove pulldown, and edit on a 23.976 timeline....I really dont want to leave Avid, but man, they are really making it hard for me here....

Re: Film and 24p settings missing? MC 3.5

Darn, well, all I can say is capture at 60i (interlace project), create your bins for the footage, and use pulldown removal with motion effect. It's realtime effect, although you'll have to render out at the end.

It's also weird that you aren't showing the precapture cadence settings - anyone esle know the reason? I know this feature isn't 4.04 exclusive and it has to be on 3.5, right?

Here is all I see in film and 24p settings, and this is only in a 720 project, in 1080 anything about pulldown is missing...

For what its worth I am posting the properties of the 2 .M2T files that I have of the footage.  The one on the left is the original footage, captured in premiere, that footage can import into MC as a 29.97 project.  The one on the right is the footage that was created in TMPGEnc with inverse pulldown employed, thats what wont work....

Gasmask, the upgrade price is much less, don't know the exact figure in US currency, but it's a couple of hundreds, which will buy both a solution to Your problem and some peace of mind; download and install the trial, if it does what You need You have 30 days of product evaluation, You will be able to complete Your job in the meanwhile, and You'll be free to rollback to MC 3.5 if budget is that tight; I'd rather paying the afforfable upgrade fee rather than wasting time to find an alternative solution which will cost money anyway, as third party encoders have to be paid for as well, don't they? Four days of experiments and a four pages thread just to find a solution for a problem that's already being found with MC 4; if You have no time to waste, as we all do, start cutting that video and bill the client instead of blaming Avid for wasting Your time, the check You'll get when delivering the job will pay for the upgrade and Your precious time.

I am going to begin cutting this project tomorrow on a friends FCP system.  I am not upgrading, I am not doing anything with Avid for some time.  I do wish I could figure out why this is not working but I guess I will not.  I was able to take the clips I was getting an error on.  I used a freeware program called MPEG2repair and it recreated the file (fixing and logging errors along the way).  Now the clip will fast import all the way to 100% where it comes back with the mysterious error "track -1 not found".  I don't know whats going on......

the mysterious error "track -1 not found"

Are you playing a sequence that contains this clip?  Was the clip already cut into this sequence prior to repairing it?

The error "track -1 not found" is sometimes caused by cutting a clip into a sequence, then modifying it, e.g. changing the number of audio tracks, then recapuring the clip.  The sequence is expecting "x" number of tracks, but the clip now has "y" number of tracks.
