You know what's real stupid, that a program like Premiere can impor these files immediately for playback (29.97 or 23.976) however look at the pic below of the 23.976 converted clip (that's the one I cant get into Avid) it appears to have been cropped a bit, like it has some kind of matte on it? Could this in any way be affecting Avid and be a part of the reason Avid thinks its a format of mpeg that is not supported?
Check your import settings to see if "Do Not resize" is checked. You have Premiere and Vegas on the same computer with Avid? No problems? I thought it wouldn't work?
I have premiere, I don't have Vegas (actually don't think Ive ever even used Vegas). CS4 on the same system works great as I can bounce from Avid to After Effects when needed. The resizing I think is happening with that MPGEnc because the original clip that I am importing into Premiere is full screen, only after it comes out of TMPEnc and I look at the footage again (CS4 Being the only option as Avid obviously wont import) do I notice that small matte). The settings are pictured as follows, does that look right to you?
Looks good! Have you tried (in TMPGENC) 1:1 (square pixel)? That might get rid of the Matte...
I dont think I have. I will give that a shot and see if Avid wants to play nice again.....will let you know, thanks!
I cant even open the 1:1 square pixel version. Either in Avid, Premiere, or even to watch it in VLC for that matter. I am doing a reinstall of TMPGEnc just to be safe. I really think it has to do with the type of MPEG that is being created. Any experts know what makes an Mpeg supported by AVID or not? I think if I can figure that out I may be able to create a .M2T file in TMPGEnc that is both the right format as well as has the inverse pulldown put on....THUS SOLVING BOTH OF MY PROBLEMS!!!
Any MPEG experts around here? Or at least Avid accepted file type experts?
For the sake of being able to edit I'd try to dub the troubling tape to a more manageable format: make an SDI copy, or an analog one if You don't have the equipments, and use that for digitizing; I know it's not a solution but this might be the less time consuming workaround, if it works, faster than transcoding anyway, and I hope this is of help.
peace luca
I dont have a hardware based system, software only so I think the SDI copy is out of the question. How do I go about making an analog one for digitizing? Thats one area of post production I am very green in...
The only other solution I can think of as far as getting this to work would be if I can find those missing settings in Avid where I can affect pulldown on capture, but that is also eluding me as of yet..
I think I have gotten down to where the problem might be. I found in all my research that a properly created MPEG with pulldown (created from TMPGEnc) should import into Avid. Something is definately up with the file that TMPGEnc is created. For S's and G's I decided to try to reimport the 23.976 file created with TMPGEnc back into TMPGEnc and I got an error message, further more, I cannot even get that output file to play in anything other than CS4. I really need someone who understands the MPEG (or .M2T) format to help me figure out where I am going wrong here. I dying here people....
Or does anyone know any other programs that I can use to capture that employ pulldown removal since that option appears not to be available to me in MC.
I hear you GasMask, not to be all sour grapes but why the hell can't Avid get their S together when it comes to HDV? I don't want to hear that this is for cutting film or that HDV isn't worth their time, "the worlds most powerful editor" should be able to handle anything you can throw at it, and for over, $2,000.00 this thing should do my dishes....epsecially since lower end programs like Premiere has no problem ingesting this media. Why can FCP handle HDV all fine and dandy, removal pulldown but Avid cannot? This has been something people have been griping about for awhile but seriously they need address this, I am sick of buying updates with the promise of "full support" to only find there is little to no support for the format that due to my budget, I currently use. I don't want to hear that 4.0 can do it, I FLAT OUT DON'T BELIEVE THAT, if thats what is being said, that was the reason I paid for 3.5 in the first place was to be able to cut my HDV 24p(f) stuff. Why does this company NEVER fix stuff and give patches? Why charge for every damn update? AVID OWES US Canon HDV users support. I have been loyal to the Avid brand for over a decade, but my patience is running very very thin with this whole HDV 24 frame business. If I had a MAC I would have moved to FCP (which I despise) a long time ago, but alas on PC this is the best editing option I have. Come on AVID get your crap together, or fire whoever is telling you that it's "not possible", it is....others can do it....SO CAN YOU!
I have projects I just mothballed because of this very issue Gas Mask, I will no doubt be watching this thread closely as I too have to film and 24p settings unless I set a 720p 23.976 project and I too don't have the option of pulldown removal upon capture in any setting. I would really love to know get the stuff I shot into my editor too!
Thanks for listening to my venting!!!
The only thing Ithink of is to start a regular interlace project; export a quicktime ref and use this program for pulldown removal:
http://dvfilm.com/maker/
I captured a whole load pf 24p Advanced into a 30i project, then I started a 23.98 project and imported my 30i bins into the 23.98 project. When you lay a video track down, Avid Automatically adds a motion effect (and speeds up the 30i clip to 125%), except it's set for Interlace to Progressive. All I did was click the Motion effect Editor and the Speed graph comes up; in the drop down menu where Source "Interlace" is (After you promote the effect), I chose 2:3 with pulldown and clicked on "detect" to catch the cadence. I Left "Blended Interpolated" on, as well as "Progressive".
If you don't have those options, then try DVFIlm Maker process...and I hope someone can help you with oyur issue soon.
Salud!
I created a 29.97 project and captured the media in question. I then opened up my 23.976 project and opened the bin containing the 29.97 media, but from there I am stuck. If I try to open up a clip from that bin in the 23.976 project it says "clip frame rate (2997) does not match project frame rate (23976)"
gasmaskproductions, You need MC 4 to do that...
