As this gets more and more bizarre, I just noticed that some of the other footage in the project (which was shot on an XH-A1), while it can be imported into my 24p project it seems to still be running at 30 frames. Basically this project includes footage from one camera thats 24p (panasonic) and that runs at 24 frames, stuff shot on an XH-A1 which I have been using Premiere CS4 to import (CS4 shows footage at 23.976 fps) as stuff shot on a Canon HV30, that is the culprit footage that I cannot get into the 24p project. But what about my other stuff that is showing up at 29.97 fps? Why is stuff that is seen by Avid at 23.976 fps by Avid being imported into a 24fps project but still running at 29.97 fps? What the hell is going on with this system here? I am so much more confused then when I started....
Ok so the plot thickens a bit more. I decided to recapture a piece of the footage in question using HDV split, which of course gives me 29.97 fps footage with pulldown inserted. I then went into TMPGEnc and reencoded, removing pulldown using the following settings I found online
1. Capture 2. Import into TMPGEnc3. Click "Filters" button4. Make sure "Deinterlace" is checked5. Change Deinterlace Mode to "24fps special animation"6. Change Deinterlace Method to "Inverse Pulldown"7. Click "OK"8. Click "Format" button9. Chose "HDV format MPEG file" (double click it)10. Click "MPEG output" in 'non-standard settings' box on the right11. Click "yes" when the warning box comes up12. Change framerate to '23.976' 13. Change DC Component to '9 bit'14. Change Display Mode to 'progressive'15. Save as template if you'd like16. Go to Encode and encode.
Now when I try to import that footage into my 23.976 timeline instead of getting the errors I posted in earlier posts, I simply get the error that reads "This type of MPEG file is not supported". I feel like I am getting closer now, why would AVID not be able to read the file. The file created my TMPGEnc was in the .m2t format. I tried importing that, as well as changing the extension to .MPG as well as .MPEG but still the same "This type of MPEG file is not supported". Is it something in my encoding settings?
Have you tried output to AVID Quicktime via TMPGENC, instead of an MT2? TMPGENC should load the AVID codecs that were installed during MEDIA COMPOSER installation.
Salud!
Ill try but wont that make an enormous file that will take hours and hours to encode? I know beggers cant be chooser but I will give it a shot right now and let you know what happens! Thanks
I tried it on a small clip. It made a huge clip (307mb), took forever to import (about 2 minutes for 10 seconds of footage) and when it did it played choppy and was no longer fullscreen, it now was displayed with a built in matte. This is so lame! Even if this worked, with the size of the file and the time to import and transcode I dont think this will be practical, I have about 80 minutes of footage that needs to be imported and if 10 seconds took be a total of about 5 minutes, this wedding project should be complete by the time they have their third child!
The clip in the source monitor was shot on the XH A1, the clip in the record monitor was the short clilp I referenced above, it plays weird, its too huge and what's up with the added matte?
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but you said you were using the Canon AX H1? Doesn't that just shoot 24f and not 24p? I believe there isn't a pulldown cadence to make is progressive, only a deinterlace or using a motion effect to make it progressive, right?
I'm a panny man, so I hope some Canon peeps can shed some light on this, because I think I have reached the end of my techinical "know-how".
Sorry, man, I tried....:)
I did and that footage works great, but this particular footage was shot from a second camera, a Canon HV30 with a Letus Mini DOF adapter on it. The way I understand it the HV30 shoots 24p not 24f as the XH A1 does. The stuff that was shot on the XH A1 is already imported and seems to work fine. I swear I am going to go to that camera mans house and punch him for using that stupid HV30! Not really but I might give him a check and then break that damn camera!
Oh, the HV30, well hopfeully the camera guy shot 24p and not cinema mode?
Here's some sites to check out:

The only issue with the stuff shot on XH A1 is that is the source monitor its reading at 29.97 clips, however it seems to read it right in the timeline as it only displays at 24 fps. What I don't know is if this is going to be an issue on the back end? I guess time will tell, at this point I cannot cut this wedding as the key footage is trapped in 29.97 land and I can only view it outside of AVID or in Premiere.....I am thinking of refunding the couple, giving them the raw, telling them I'm sorry, and going to get drunk....
I will check those out, it was shot 24p and not cine mode, I made sure of that myself before we began. That stupid Cine Mode is a beast I wont go near again....
Is it possible I don't have the right codec or something installed on my system? What won't Avid be compatible with the .M2T clip I created with TMPGEnc. Now that I just keep getting the not compatible with that type of MPEG error I really think it could be something more simple. These clips seem to play fine outside of Avid with pulldown removed (inverse telecine). Any chance this could be the case?
What's your IMPORT setting under image? Did you isntall the AVID codec pack? Anyone want to jump in? I'm the least qualified out of the host of experts on this forum, but I'm tryin'...
Believe me man, your help has been more then appreciated. What exactly do you mean under "image". I believe I have the AVID codec pack installed, I have been using Avid for years (at 60i) and have never had problems.
In the IMPORT settings, click on image; usually it's for importing stills, but if you are importing video files (and not capturing them), I believe it applies to that too. You see settings for "Fields (no fields in your case)"...wait, you have a 23.98 project, so fields wont come up.
The only thing I can think of is to play with the motion effect editor and try the list that was sent to you. At this point, I hope some one with more expertise chimes in....sorry, bro.
I appreciate all your help. I hope someone chimes in too. I looked at those image settings and you're right no mention of fields. I dont know what to do with the motion effect, as I cannot even get this file into my project. The closest I get is when I try to import the footage it looks like its going to start and I get the "mismatched" error (i posted a pic of that earlier) or I get the "this type of MPEG is not supported" What is wrong with the .M2T file that I am creating with TMPGEnc? How is it different than the .M2T that HDVSPLIT or Premiere is creating? If I can figure that out maybe I can get this footage in Avid. Someone has got to know.....
