    Batch Dig'ing from a Canon HV30?

I posted about this to an older thread. Did not get many replies so I thought I'd create a whole new post.

I am trying the MC 4.02 Demo.

I'd like to buy the software but batch capturing is inconsistent with my Canon Vixia HV30. So far using the Generic DV Basic capture settinghas worked best but it's still a roll of the dice whether it'll work. I've gone through each Canon camera model listed w/ no success. The footage is simple HDV. No 24f etc. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have an HV-20 and have had very inconsistent results as well. I can usually get it to work, but it takes some doing. I believe the HV's always record in drop-frame, so making your project is set to drop frame and that your in and out points actually exist in drop frame timecode I found helpful, IRRC. But it won't solve all your problems.

Firewire capture is not one of MC's strong points. I've also found that you have to exit the capture toolset before turing off your camera or you'll get an obnoxious error message. And you should turn off your camera before closing MC or you'll get an obnoxious error message.

There are some free standalone capture programs that you can use; perhaps someone can chime as to what they are (I use Sony Vegas when I have a particularly difficult capture issue) that can batch capture. If you set the Avid project an import settings properly, the .m2t files captured by one of these programs can be fast imported into MC w/o taking much time or causing any quality hit.

    HTH.

P.S. If you want to remove the pulldown from the HV-30, TMPGEnc Xpress 4.0 does a fabulous job and will transcode the result into the DNxHD codec which can also be fast imported into MC.
