Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

I am still getting the same issues with the new Blackmagic Desktop and the latest Avid 2024.2. Is anyone getting this to work solidly? When I can get it not to crash, performance is slow, 'sticky' each click has a few second delay till it finally crashes.

please if anyone is making this work I'd love to know what you did. Avid has no solution other than to tell me to work in fullscreen mode. Not ideal for a professional cutting room.

Same issues here on M1 Ultra, 64GB Ram, Mac OS 12.6.8, MC 2023.12 and MC 2024.2 both more stable with BMD but slow and sluggish, not possible to work with it. BMD said that the issue seems to be on avid side. Can we expect some fix?

Thank you. Chanign th settings in the BMD app helps with the black frame. I also changed to display full frame when paused instead of single field which seems to help the stability of playback. I haven't tried editing yet but I am hopeful these two settings might actually help.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

Hi everyone, after a few weeks since the upgrade I am sad to report that I am still getting beachball and having to force quit MediaComposer. I am running 2024.2 and the latest version of the BMD driver on MacOS 13.6.4

Switching some of the settings in the BMD control app helps a little bit but I am experiencing crashes daily, every two hours. Overall, a very unreliable experience. Happy to take a deep dive with Avid if someone cares to get to the bottom of this.

There are a few other issues that don't need to be mentioned in this thread but can share with an Avid tech expert.

Here on a macbookpro M1max (12.7.3), only combination that works with no beachballing with BMD (ultrastudio monitor3g) is MC2022.7 and BMD 12.4.1. We still get occasional playback stops and need to press the space bar to resume playback.

Not sure who you spoke to, but this is not true. Avid's engineers are in constant communication with BMD's engineers, and the BMD folks are hard at work getting all of the updates made. Each update that the BMD team releases will contain more and more fixes. There is no fix or release that needs to happen on the Avid side. The driver is BMD's product.

    Hey Mark

Did you see this note on settings that St.John posted.

In the Blackmagic settings, Video Output > Video Playback, you can choose Display freeze Frame when not playing, and there is no longer black frames at the end of playbacks,

Also with all the crashing it might be best to create a new project and copy yout bin and media into it.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

    Yes, that's correct, I have 12.8.1 and avid 2024.2, I've tried 2023.12, it's the same. I'm on Monterey 12.6.8, I've tried on Ventura - it's the same.

Performance is sluggish. Trimming is nearly not possible, playhead jumps when i stop playback.

I have the settings you wrote in BMD, I've actually tried nearly every combination in the BMD Video Desktop driver. I have tried to test on new project, reinstalling, restarting, new user settings, everything.

I have bm box turned off on my table for 8 months, it's ridiculous.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

    Hi Marianna,

Performance is a little better since changing the settings within the BMD app but I am getting this message:

Exception: std: exception, what"Segmentation fault" in thread "Waveform Cache Thread", at address 0x0

No spinning beachball yet but I am sure that we heavier editing workload and moving a lot around the sequence it will pop up. Additionally, without fail, every time I quit MC, it ends up actually crashing, prompting a message on the screen that the application has crashed. I inquired with an Avid tech about it a few months ago and I was told it is related to the glitchy compatibility with the BMD driver - it still occurs even after the installation of the latest BMD driver.

Another issue, and it's more of an oddity than an issue, is that on two of the systems when upgrading MC the software updates wholly within Avid Link, on another system the update pops out of Avid Link and launches a typical Mac installation sequence with windows prompting us to accept this and that... this is on three separate computers but running the same version of Avid Link, updating from and to the same version of MC, running on the same MacOS.

    Thanks Marianna

    Hi 247drowsy.....

I created a case for this - case # 04771861 and have asked Philip K. one of our awesome techs to assist you.  He actually has a setup and is doing editing on a MC Mac and BMD system himself so he is the best one for this.

I know you are frustrated and we will get to the bottom of it as something with the set up might be impacting - as so many others have success with the new driver and settings.

Philip is in the UK and will get on it first thing in the am.

Hi Nims and thanks for responding..... I just conversed with Philip on chatter and he is going to take this one on too.  Might be buffer related or some oddity such as that.  I am going to find out whio you spoke with in tech as the crashing when quitting has really nothing to do with the driver and they should know that - sorry.

Philip will also look at the Avid Link situation and escalate if needed - I am on the link meetings so I can also push it.

    Best to you...

    Thank you Marianna,

Just FYI, it was under a different username and account that I was told the crashing upon quit is related to the BMD driver. Happy to share that account info privately.

Re: NO Improvement with MC 2022.12.4, Blackmagic, and Mac Studio

Ok, all issues solved. Last night during an intense editing session MC came to a standstill. It didn't crash but it was very slow and sluggish and barely responsive. I notived it was attempting to save to a .avp file in the user folder in the shared project folder on our NEXIS. I force quit MC, navigated to that folder and deleted the .avp and Settings.xml files in that folder. I restated MC and it's smooth sailing since. Zero crashes, handles the media like a champ, zero error messages and zero crashes while working in full res in a very very complex sequence of a two hour long feature documentary.

So, for anyone on shared storage, I recommend deleting these two files and restarting MC. These two files will get rebuilt as the project launches and hopefully your troubles are a thing of the past. All this by the way coupled with the good suggestion to go into the BMD control panel and select "display a full frame on video output" and "displays freeze frame when not playng".

Now just need to figure out the crash-upon-quit issue.
