Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

    Hi all-

Just want to confirm whether anyone else is seeing this behavior:

Apple Mac Studio, M1 Max, 64GB RAM, MacOS 12.4 (build 21F79) with Avid Nexis Client version 22.5.0 installed, using the built in Ethernet interface to connect to the Nexis subnet

    Server version 21.12.0.85

The Mac Studio kernel panics during Finder copy operations... so far, just tried copying from the local file system to a Nexis workspace, and haven't been able to troubleshoot further.

This issue (or similar) was mentioned in the v22.5 release notes (SSENG-30847), but it appears that it may not be fixed.

    Anyone else encounter this?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

I'm seeing this with the 2022.5 client on our M1 24" iMacs running 12.4 as well - Finder copy operations will cause a kernel panic.

I also nitced that kernel panics are listed under Known Issues but hard to know if this is one of those cases.

Re: Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

The jury is still out here. We have several M1 systems.

An M1 Mini we use for LTO backups; with Nexis 2021.12 and Big Sur it was KP'ing like crazy and was completely unusable. Once we were able to upgrade to Monterey and 2022.5 it all went away.

We also have an M1 Studio Ultra, and I still can't figure that one out. Some "phantom reboots" that M1 is notorious for, very few KP reports, Resolve hanging in an odd fashion, and I can't even tell if it's the Nexis, SoftRAID, random USB-C drives, all of the above, or neither. It's sporadic and rare enough, that as not-the-end user I haven't been able to reproduce it yet.

    Hello,

same here, with two Mac Studio, M1 Max, 64 GB latest macOS and 1 Macbook Pro, similar configuration.

Nexis Server and Client on latest versions. Also tried with older versions.

Kernel panics on Finder copy and or slow copy speeds.

Avid MediaComposer crashes on consolidate jobs.

Premiere Pro is very unstable when used with Nexis. Works fine from SSD drive.

Same with MediaComposer and Davinci Resolve.

On our Intel Macs everything works fine with Nexis.

Spent hours with our reseller testing and changing stuff.

The only thing we coudn't change was the switch.

What switch are you using with your Nexis?

Re: Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

We're still on an older Dell switch, but I can't see how that could precipitate a kernel panic (I'm open to explanations.)

For what it's worth, I can tell you that I was able to change the problem behavior by removing extended attributes attached to files on the MacOS filesystem. In our case, we could reliably crash the machine by attempting to copy files from the local file system to the Nexis that had been downloaded using a web browser, and thus had Apple's 'quarantine' attributes attached.

I could remove those attributes and then the same collection of files would copy over without issue.

I don't think this is the root cause, since I was able to copy another set of files with similar attributes, but it did fix the issue in at least one case.

To check files for these attributes, use the command:

    ls -al@

Extended attributes (if any) will appear below each file/folder listing. "com.apple.quarantine" and "com.apple.macl" are examples.

    To remove the attributes, use:

    xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /path/to/file/here

I'm curious if anybody else can replicate this.

Re: Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

The switch was the only thing we couldn't change so we tought there could be a problem.

But the switch is no longer a suspect as my reseller could replicate the problem and he has a different switch.

I tested your attributes theory and it is as you say. Crashes with attributes set and doesn't crash after removing the attributes.

What will also crash the machine every time, is using AJA System Test Lite (free download in the Mac App Store) with certain settings. (See image). When I set it to write single files instead of of one big file, it will crash the computer every time.

The generated files also have the "com.apple.quarantine" attribute set.

All of this doesn't really explain the problems I have with the different NLEs in combination with M1 and Nexis but maybe it will make the developers take a look at the problems and fix them.

Re: Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

    Thanks for confirming!

I'm not a developer, so I'm just speculating, but it would seem the issue is related to or caused by small file I/O operations.

Is anybody from Avid on this thread? Any Nexis product managers?

I have a support ticket open with Avid now about this issue, but would love to know that somebody's paying attention. We desperately need to buy new Macs and right now I'm shopping for 2013 Mac Pro trashcans to fill the demand.

I'd love to know how a 3rd party driver is cause the OS to give up. I thought OS design had moved beyond that nowadays?

Don't they operate in a way to limit 3rd party drivers misbehaving?

I'm guessing that's the cause. One of the nexis drivers isn't compatible with the M1 requirements and an unstable state results.

Has this been resolved for anyone?

Any information from Avid on this?

We are still experiencing this problem and it is a constant struggle to work around it.

    Thanks,

    André

Re: Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

I tested client 2022.12 and the result was exactly the same as with 2022.9 and 2022.5.

    Kernel panics and bad performance.

I have not yet installed server 2022.12.

I'm still on macos Monterey with my clients.

Has anyone tested with macos Ventura?

Hi, just signed up to chime in on this.

We've had this problem since we upgraded our lineup to Apple Silicon + Monterey. I just tried the AJA System Test test above and it did indeed cause a kernel panic.

I raised a ticket with Avid a few months back and they linked me to Avid Nexis Client Manager v22.9.0.135 which helped a bit, but the problem is still there. Our Nexis is running firmware 21.12.1.97

I upgraded one machine to Ventura 13.2 but made no difference.

Re: Kernel panics on Apple M1, Nexis Client 22.5

I'm chiming in as well that I am seeing sporadic kernal panics on Mac OS 12.5, 12.5.1, 12.6, 12.6.2 from Mac Studio M1 using 2022.7 and 2022.12 copying data to Nexis Workspaces from Mac Finders has on occasion caused kernal panics.  A pink screen of momentary psychadelics and then an immediate reboot.

I will eventually raise this with Avid once I can get closer to a pattern though I suspect file permissions or attributes as mentioned before is likely.

Got some success, I raised a ticket with Avid again and asked them to send me another updated version from the 22.9 they sent me last time.

Under 22.9 doing the AJA test I get a kernel panic within 5 seconds every time

Testing this version 22.12 I ran the test fully 3 times and no kernel panic so give this a shot:

    Here's the latest version:

I'm wondering if they mentioned wheter or not 22.12 client will be happy with Nexis 21.3.1.25 ?
