I feel your pain. I just tried using it and the level of anxiety that it gave was no joke.
I lost that battle and decided to edit the project in my laptop using 2020 instead of the my imac.
Why Avid why???? COT
Just upgraded to Big Sur and MC 2021.3... was mostly hesitant about losing legacy titling.
Titler Plus seems better than when I first tried it, as far as manipulating text, but performance is horrible. Titles have to be rendered now. What gives?
TITLER+ IS AN UTTER FAIL.
Avid, you are NOT an industry leader. You are a follower. And we're all OK with that. Save us the grief, don't bother trying to create new paradigms. Stick with what's already established and let us all get on with our work.
Titler+ behaves like a broken toy right out of the box. Key commands that are universal across most design apps don't work. So much manual drag-selecting to complete simple tasks that should take a fraction of the time. That's the tip of the icebrg. Changing the leading introduces unwanted distortion. Sloppy tools and all around awkwardness.
Follow the pack, Avid. Have a look at Adobe, there's no shame in utilizing ideas that work.
TITLER+ MUST GO.
The main problem for me is that there is no alpha channel with Titler+, so no way to use Boris FX (or other third party plugins) on titles - unlike with the old title tool. Since Boris FX is almost essential to me with Avid, this makes the whole Avid workflow impossible. This will be highlighted when I need to buy new mac hardware (and its associated new OS) and find I can no longer use the old title tool (post Mojave).
I'm finding daVinci 17 Studio is far more flexible when it comes to manipulating text and text FX - without the annual cost of paying for Avid "upgrade" tweaks that seem to be going in the wrong direction whilst bringing us more bugs that are not being addressed. Some years ago Avid asked users in a major survey what would be useful features to implement...
Any suggestions about a third party plug-in that can substitute TItle+?
Thanks

What about the new blue titler pro? I've heard some good stuff about that.
Never tried it though, so i'm not sure!

Completely useless. So slow on a brand new high spec computer. I have a big project coming up so I was practicing on it. To make a SIMPLE title with flying text the machine slowed to a crawl. FOR A SIMPLE TITLE!?!
It is unusable as a professional tool. I would be embarrassed to try and use it in front of a producer.
I will be using Resolve for the titling on this project.
AVID you really need to rethink titler+.
I have been using Resolve with success. You need to round trip the background footage or decide on a title length then create it in Resolve and export with alpha into your numbered MC folder, then drag and drop the MSMMMOB file into the bin.
https://www.avidblogs.com/how-to-roundtrip-davinci-resolve-to-avid-media-composer-tutorial/
Then cut in it into AVID and apply a matte key, step into the key and on the bottom layer cut in a second layer and select "show alpha" and viola, you have a resolve title in AVID as a matte key.
Sounds like a lot of work but it is faster than trying to use titler+ and there are plenty of preset titles in Resolve or just make you own.
Long time frequenter of the forum, first time posting. Hello everyone.I suppose it's fairly appropriate that my first post is in regards to the Titler+ tool. I was browsing on here looking desperately for some tips and tricks in dealing with this tool - but all I found was (mostly) frusteration.I love the idea of the Titler+ tool, the potential of it, and I still use it much to my own chagrin - but my gosh what a mess this thing is.I can deal with it bogging down during operation, I can deal with it having it bug out and crash my app, but I CANNOT stand the fact that it requires so much render time. Even on a simple timeline! It would behoove AVID to open up Premiere or Resolve and see how it's done when it comes to Text Tools. Just saying...
Ha! While I was rendering my Titler Plus effect I thought I'd check the Avid Community- and your post is what i read!
Yes, and why does a very simple title, with just a dropshadow, need to be rendered?
And I have so many complaints about how this is not elegant, or even 'normal'.

Hi, I'm pretty new to this forum but I've been an Avid editor for 20+ years. I just loaded an iMac with 2021 and now trying to navigate this Titler+... I agree, it's incredibly frustrating, counter-intuitive, and a massive waste of time. I'm trying to do a simple keyframe animation with some text and nothing about this tool seems to work smoothly. I even have the bounding box suddenly morph into this long vertical box that goes way beyond the frame for no reason at all. I've wasted so much time today trying to do simple things with this tool... truly Avid needs to toss this and bring back the legacy tool.
Also not to mention the documentation is terrible and doesn't even exactly seem to match up with the software's options in places. Do they know how this software is supposed to work...? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you want to guarantee Boris will work with you titling solution then I'd suggest Title Studio from... Boris FX.
They were giving away a free copy a while back, not sure if that's still a deal they are doing or not.
Haven't upgraded in two years because I need the older titler for legacy projects. So Avid has had 2 years worth of cash from me and I have seen sweet FA in return. This year I will not be renewing. Fool me once etc etc.
Andi
@ripvanmarlowe - Yes, Boris also recommend their solution! However, not all post houses have Boris FX, so you can end up having to re-make everything at the online stage. My old Boris only works with up to Avid 8.9.x, so I would need to buy a new Avid license at the cost of 1700 dollars. I am starting a long form doc later this year and will be using my old Avid 8.9.1 + old Boris, as I still need access to legacy projects. Committing to the latest Avid/Mac OS upgrades is a backwards step for me.
I agree about shovelling money into Avid for the last two years and seeing little benefit. They recently introduced UME linking, which, bizarrely, links two track audio as a combined stereo track by default. It also doesn't display the correct details in the bin columns as compared to the old AMA QT link. I raised these issues 12 months ago. Avid have only now (August 2021) confirmed: "...The Engineering department has now reached a conclusion about this issue. The behavior itself is as designed." So it's a feature, not a bug! I realise that was off-topic, but I fear that Avid's response re Titler+ will be similar: that the inflexibility and difficulty of use will be described as a "feature", for the foreseeable...
@Adam006 - if your iMac is capable if running Mojave 10.14.6, you can download the legacy components package mentioned in this thread above.
As a loyal Avid on Mac user for around 28 years, I am now stuck when it comes to upgrading. When I have to purchase new Mac hardware, I won't be able to install Mojave, so will lose access to the old title tool, whilst grappling with the infexible and unuseable Titler+. Also, I would need to purchase a new (expensive Avid AVX) BorisFX license. Given all that, it is making more and nore sense to seriously consider switching to an alternative, possibly ditching either or both Avid and Mac.
In the meantime, I suggest Avid users download and check out DaVinci 17 to see the way the titles work there, ie: they just work intuitively. I realise this is not a solution for current Avid users, but it demonstrates how easy and flexible a title tool can be. Not to mention all the other FX, corrections, and world class colour grading that come with it.
I feel you Danny, Boris is expensive (although it is awesome), and it is galling to have to pay that much cash just to get a titler. I've been being hassled by the production I'm on for ages as to why we can't buy new Mac hardware and I have to keep telling them that we can't. They understandably want to buy the kit instead of continuously hiring it, but buying new Mac hardware means no legacy title tool. So this screw up by Avid is costing people real money all the time.
I'm honestly shocked at the response. Avid has a lot of long time, loyal customers but they are really squandering that loyalty with this debacle. I want new Mac hardware and I want access to the legacy title tool for older projects which means even if Avid persists with Titler+ they absolutely need to be working in parallel on making the old titler compatible with a 64bit OS. One of the things Avid was known for was the superior backwards compatibility of it's products - you could open a bin from a version from ten years ago and still have it work - they need to continue this practice with the titler. And all we get from Avid is crickets - I want a road map out of this mess.
