I am a fan of AVID and its standard tools. But now i am working in a 4K project and I am losing tons of time just by making a simple lower third title. It needs to animate a bit, but it just wont do what I want. Just make is move up or down seems to be impossible. With the old Title Tool, I was able to do that in a minute. Now I am frustrated because after an hour it still won't do a simple move.

I am really frustrated . How can a professional company like AVID make such a bad tool.

Why can't I make a simple move of my title? Is it me?

Many of us feel similarly about Titler+. Over two years since it was introduced, and far from ready for prime time. Much discussed here in the forums, very little inprovement in usability so far. 

My hope is that many more speak up about their frustrations etc. w/ Titler+, and that Avid at some point gives this real attention for improvement. It's a sad day when one pines for the old Title Tool - quite limited, but it (mostly) works! Rewrite the 32bit code and make it 4K compatible - not a great solution, but much much better than het geklooi that's called Titler+.

2020.6 T+ is better than ever.

AVID Titler+ better in 2020.6? Well….No! Not on my PC's.

In fact, it is completely GONE! I can’t open it anymore.

I am working on a project and switch back and forward from a Windows desktop PC to a Windows laptop. That worked perfectly until 2020.6

On the desktop it’s working, but on the laptop is won’t open. What ever I do. The symbol of Titler+ is clickable but nothing happens. If I open a existing Title+ title, also nothing.

I completely uninstalled Media Composer. Deleted all directory’s that had any link to it, including the files in ‘ProgramData’ and all user setting etc etc.

Reboot and download a fresh version from by AVID account. Install, reboot, etc etc. But still no Titler+.

So What is going on with this incredible bad Title plugin?

Any help getting it to work again is appreciated.

Titler+ is probably one of the worst pieces of software I have ever encountered. On any platform. For any task. A possible exception being the "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" game cartrige for the Atari 2600 (yes I had it, it was a present, don't @ me).

What's wrong with Titler+? Literally everything. UI, implementation, reliability, features, workflow.

The old Title Tool wasn't all that bad. It just needed to have layout and design features expanded and some of the media management funkiness addressed, namely that one should be able to edit a title from a bin, save it back to itself (without creating new media), and have the change reflected on all instances of that title on the timeline.

How to fix it? I hate to say it, but get a copy of Premiere and just duplicate its titler, please.

Sorry to bring up the chief competitor, but put aside company loyalty for a second and just examine their implementation of the capability from an objective standpoint.

Permiere is annoying in many ways, and as an editing platform doesn't hold a candle to MC, but its titler, even ten years ago, was light years ahead: powerful, flexible (you can create everything from simple placeholders to cheesy, glossy 80s-inspired extrued text with glows and highlights), intuitive and easy to use, and seamlessly integrated into media management.

A platform as powerful as Media Composer should have a robust and reliable integrated titling capability without having to rely on 3rd-party plugins with proprietary UIs.

Seriously you have the best software engineers in the business. This should not be an impossible task and you've had literally decades to figure it out. You just need to make it a priority.

I'm not sure if it still works on the Mac, but Marquee still works on the PC, And it's not resolution dependent. You can create a title of any size (4K, 8K, etc.) by setting a custom resolution. I've tested this, and it works.

To start Marquee, you first have to change the project size to HD. Then start the title tool and choose Marquee. After that, you can change the project back to UHD or whatever you're using.

In Marquee, go to File->Preferences->Current Title. Under Format, choose Custom. You can now enter the resolution in the dialog box.

Change View->Background to remove the current background, and change the render options to PNG, and select Save Matte as Alpha. Render the title, link to the file from whatever directory in which it was saved. The title will show up as a Matte Key with the name of the title. 

It's a bit more work, but it does allow you to use Marquee. BTW, once you've opened Marquee, leave it minimized. Otherwise you'll have to repeat the process of changing the project format to start it again.

One other thing to note: Marquee is very slow to render for animations. There's nothing much that can be done about that.

Yes its a shame its taken ths amount of time to straighten up Titler + but we are getting there. Each new update brings improvements.

In the meantime its allowed me to get better at After Effects :-)

Agreed, it's a nightmare.

Just try using Boris FX and see what (doesn't) happen anymore.

The recent MC 2021.12 has seen a bit of an improvement in the UI of Titler+, so I decided to download it on my second partition to test it out with a trial BCC2021. All was going well until I tried to add a Boris FX filter to a new Titler+ caption. I tried every which way, only to find it won’t take to the Titler+ captions at all. It affects all layers below, not just the caption. I wrote to Boris FX and got this reply: “...Unfortunately, I believe this problem you are seeing is because the Avid Titler+ does not Support an Alpha Channel, for any Filter (not just BCC, but any other third-party, and possibly even Avid Native filters of a similar nature)… You can talk to Avid Support to confirm this, but I believe this lack of Alpha support inherent in the Titler+ is the cause of this problem.” Surely any title tool must have an alpha channel? Avid have yet to explain. To me, this seems like a deal breaker. So I would need to spend another £1200 to upgrade BCC only to not be able to use it on Avid titles in future. Avid will probaly say it’s not a bug, but a feature - like making all UME linked clips with stereo tracks that then have to be modified to twin mono is a "feature".

It's like they are begging us to find another program to use.

Unfortunately, Avid is well known, in my opinion, for jumping the gun on releasing stuff that is not 100 yet.  But it is still the best editor out there, again in my opinion, on quality UI adjustment and overall editing.  Some things just take some troubleshooting or work arounds to make certain aspects work.  But I still love this editor till the end.  On complex stuff, it is actually a juggle between after effects and MC, but I still lean towards Avid, because I love the interface more.  This release may have issues left and right if the envelope is being pushed and sometimes even not if it is being pushed.  Nevertheless, it is a solid workhorse.  I hope you are able to find ways around your issues.

I agree 100% with you Mike. I am working with AVID for a long time now and have seen many bugs. I’m working for a news station and long ago they started using AVID News Cutter. It is stable enough for fast and last minute editing. But now everything is MC with NC keyboard layouts. I like that very much, use that layout myself to. Fortunately this station is still HD, so no problems there with the Title Tool jet, but I am afraid that when they decide to go UHD/4k, that there will be tons of issues that need to be solved. It’s a network of many many AVID systems. All connected to a big server. But they also have good technicians that know what they are doing.

Today I installed the update 2021-2, so I’ll test the Title editor again. But I won’t expect any improvements.

 

 

That's awesome, glad to hear!  And thank you for making me aware there was another update for MC.  I didn't even realize there was one and it has been a while since it was released haha.  I am off grid right now and downloaded it from my phone hotspot haha.  Happy cutting Remco

 

As a side note to the update, MC definitely seems to load faster, even in the sequence I was having constant spinning wheels or crashes yesterday.  It could be my imagination, but I choose to be an optimist at this point haha
