I have been wishing for a method to set up templates so that when creating new projects the process is easier. I have read several positive references to Dylan's Templater, which I did download a couple of years ago and never got around to trying.

I tried to install this (my version is setup-templater-2_0_0_1.msi) and the install process ran, but following the install I could not find any evidence of the application being installed - neither in Windows folders, Program Files folders or anywhere else.

Whenh i next opened MC, I could see that it was taking much longer to load, but it opened OK - from within Avid's menus I couldn't find any reference to Templater either.

I checked the website for Dylands Templater that I found in this forum, http://dylanreeve.com/software/dylans-templater but this website seems to be down - as is the root http://dylanreeve.com also

Any words of wisdom on this subject out there? Does anyone have a more up to date versioon of Templater - and if installed, how does it work and manifest itself to the user?

Look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Edit Geek\Templater\Templater.exe. If it is not there search for templater.exe

Add.   I think Version 2 is the newest version. It is the one that I have.

Easy to use.

Make a new Project. Lay it out as you want the template to be.  You can use an existing project however you may then have to deal with the media in the original project. I have never tried this.

Open the Templater program.   Add the Project you greated for the template into the left box.  Select the folder that your Avid Projects are stored in.  Enter a new name for the project you are creating.

Highlight /select the original template project and click the Create Project button.  Done.

Tghis templater utility is brilliant - I spent the whole day creating a standard HD project, with all the right bins, column settings and orders, default empty sequences etc. and it took about 12 hours - but 12 hours well invested as it took Templater only 15 seconds to create a new and fully working project. A nice days work - thanks for all those who pointed me in that direction :)

Does anyone have an installer or link to Dylan's Templater?

I've had a hunt around and can't find it on the net, his web page seems to be down.

I spent the some hours this week searching for Templater and found that the site was down, but I was lucky that I had a copy that I had downloaded in 2014 - I don't know if there have been updates, but having used the application yesterday I think it's working fine. I have posted it to my server so that others can download it -

Of course I have no rights to this progam and no association with it's designer, so if I'm acfting out of hand here, let me know and I'll take it down. But I hope that others wil find it useful.

As I wrote yesterday, it really is worth taking the time to make all those adjustments to a default project so that you end up with things set up the way you want it and with access to all the folders and clips that you might find useful.

There is no documentation with this, but the opeation is simple...

Manually create your default project in Media Composer (as normal, Templater isn't involved yet). You can make several defaults for HD, SD or whaterver.

Here you create a project with the folder and bin structure you want, the project properties (HD 1080-50i and 709 colour space or whatever) and import the stock clips, test patterns, and other archive resources you would like to have available in all future projects of this type. You can even create default timeline sequences with the track configuration you are used to, and with colour bars and countdown idents at the start and save these with the project so that you can copy them and use them quickly.

When you are happy with your default project, close Media Composer and open the templater utility. (It doesn't create a desktop shortcut under install, but you can find it at -

C:\Program Files (x86)\Edit Geek\Templater\Templater.exe

In the utility you define your default project directory folder (where Avbic MC usually stores it's project data), the filename of the default project you wish to use as your template, and the name of the project that you wish to create. Then press enter/create.

It takes but a few seconds. Next tie you open Media Composer, your new project will be there in the list to choose from. (Don't open the default template unless you wish to update it for future projects).

At some point when using Templator you should encounter a if you find the program useful "Make a donation" prompt.  In my opinion it was never about the money for Dylan. Apart from just being helpful to other editors  it could well have been a "see how easy to is to implement templates with MC" message to Avid.
