I downloaded new free version, Media-First, installed it, but when I try to open it, I get main edit page but no buttons will work; only makes chirp noise. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
What Computer and which OS version is installed?Does it have enough RAM installed for MC | First? If Windows did you unzip the download from the Root of your C:\drive?Have you previously had a full version of MC installed on this computer? If so try downloading the latest full version of MC. Unzip this (From root level C:\ drive if PC)Install MC. Reboot. Use this MC installers uninstaller.Open the Avid Application Manager then Preferences and use the Clear Cache button.Uninstall The Avid Application Manager. RebootThen install MC | First Good Luck

Try to open MC | First from Application Manager window :
Bushfilm did this work for you?
Pilot and AndrewAction's advice helped me, and my problem sounds like it was the same as yours!
This is what worked for me:
1. Upgraded my RAM so that I had at LEAST 6gb (in my case, I went from 4gb to 16gb)
2. Uninstalled "First" totally, by clicking on the START menu and typing 'apps & features' then clicking the top option - "Apps & Features SYSTEM SETTINGS". Then clicking MEDIA COMPOSER FIRST and choosing UNINSTALL. Once this was finished, I uninstalled the other two items labelled Avid (App Manager and the Cloud Services)
3. I downloaded the latest version of the full Media Composer 8.9 to the root of my C:\ drive
4. I unzipped to a folder at the root of my c:/ drive
5. I installed the full version of Media Composer
6. Rebooted
7. Opened the Avid Application Manager then Preferences and clicked the Clear Cache button.
8. Uninstalled Media Composer - by clicking on the START menu and typing 'apps & features' then clicking the top option - "Apps & Features SYSTEM SETTINGS". Then clicking MEDIA COMPOSER and choosing UNINSTALL. Once this was finished, I uninstalled the other two items labelled Avid (App Manager and the Cloud Services)
9. Rebooted
10. Downloaded the latest Media Composer First to the root of my C:/ drive
11. I unzipped to a folder at the roof of my c:/ drive
12. I installed Media Composer First
13. Rebooted
14. Opened the APP MANAGER
15. Clicked on ACCOUNT tab and signed in
16. Checked that in the ACCOUNT tab it says "Media Composer | First" then 'Perpetual'
17. Clicked the APPS tab
18. Checked that next to 'Media Composer | First' there is blue text saying 'Open' (it's super important to make sure this says 'open' here - if it says 'sign in' or anything else you need to go back through the steps and double check them all)
19. Clicked the blue text saying 'open'

You mean when you launch MC from the desktop icon it will launch MC but you get main edit page but no buttons will work; only makes chirp noise, it's working when you launch from the AppMan "Open" button?
Thanks,

I wrote about it here http://community.avid.com/forums/t/181136.aspx
I have the same problems even after full reinstall my Windows. I use the app manager to launch MC First.

Vladyslav,
your Fujitsu LifeBook T731 have 4 GB RAM and MC|First requires the same minimum 8 GB RAM as full MC 8.9 version.
p.s.
Yeah, but I can work with 4GB :) It's quite enough for my projects. I just want to start MC from my desktop without App Manager.
I've just updated to 8.9.1 and I can't get into avid even from App Manager.

Your still with that 4 gig of RAM? I'm sure you know that MC|First requires atleast 8gig.
I worked with 4GB RAM in Avid MC|First 8.9.0 with no problems. The problem is only with dashboard. here is my problem http://community.avid.com/forums/p/181434/845979.aspx In 8.9.0 I could start the MC in App Manager. But in 8.9.1 the App Manager method doesn't work. When I start the MC from desktop shortcut or from App manager I see a non-clicable window without dashboard where I can create or open my project. It's a software bug, it's not a RAM problem! The dashboard is just invisible. When I try some keyboard shortcuts like ALT+SPAСE and other I see the black dashboard.
It's a bug definitely - I'm not sure why everyone is so reticent to say it is! Argh.
There are workarounds that sometimes work - installing the full Avid version, uninstalling, blah blah blah but it's definitely a bug and it has not been fixed in the latest version.
I'm assuming that's because they don't know how to fix it!
No buttons will work; only makes chirp noise.

Finally after nearly three weeks of late nights I finally have overcome the Initialization,Path/Folder issues maybe now stalled on :- I get main edit page but no buttons will work; only makes chirp noise.
in order to address the issue of compatability with my Toshibe i7 Laptop I re-tested with Adobe, Premier, and yet again my full version MC 8.9 there are no apparent issues ..
