The same issue I had with 8.6.3 and 8.6.5 has carried forward to Mac MC 8.7.0.  Avid starts fine and goes through all the splash-page loads then locks up on a small white box just before the projects page appears.  I'm on a Mac tower 5,1 12 core, OS 10.11.6, Symphony option, BMD Desktop Video 10.8.4.

I have no Matrox drivers and I've removed any trace of MB Looks. 

Are there any audio plug in conflicts that anyone knows about?  Anything else I can try? 8.6.1 functions fine and I'll be rolling back to that.

The only way to know for sure is to remove any 3rd=party plugins and see if it works. Then add them back as needed.

Do you have any Sony AMA plugins? If so, they should be replaced by nablet ones.

Yes, I think that will have to be my next step. I did replace the Sony AMA plug ins with those by nablet.

Update - Bad AVX plug in.  It was an old Eyeheight Broadcast Safe evaluation plug in.  8.7 now launches without issue.
