It seems pretty useless, as far as I can tell. I would say it works properly approximately 10% of the time. Probably less. The other 90% of the time it is stuck on "synching" endlessly.
Sorry, I'm not trying to flame uselessly. But it is a genuine question. If I can't launch my computer and have the Avid Application Manger tell me that there is an update available Media Composer, then what purpose does this software serve?
Do you have the latest version of AppMan (2.4.1)? They have been making improvements along the way.
Also, are you behind any kind of firewall?

I downloaded 8.4 the other day (I've been using 8.3), and now Avid won't open.
I get the 'This software was released past your contract expiration date', etc., but I signed up for v8 in December, so I know that can't be true.
I see that I should be able to launch my Application Manager and deactivate my license (and then reactivate it) but I don't know where my Application Manager is (I only have such a thing in an Avid Uninstallers folder).
Can someone kindly advise me on this? How do I open 8.4 and tell it I'm licensed?
thanks,
Malcolm
AvidApplicationManager is in /Applications/Avid/Application Manager.
If you continue to have licensing issues, contact Avid support or e-mail Marianna.
Hi Kevin. I should have been able to find that. I was able to deactivate and then activate. Should be fine now.
thanks so much,
Well, and I guess it comes down to... if an Application Manager cannot update itself (or at least provide notifications on when it needs updating), how can I expect it to manage applications?
I've spent years pounding through Avid's byzantine web pages to find Media Composer updates. I'd rather not do the same thing for a second application that exists solely for the purpose of making the aforementioned searching unnecessary, but doesn't.
Also, no firewall.

Kevin,
What version of AppMan are you currently running? I know it's a pain but it has gotten better. If you're stuck on an old version we can get that fixed. There are also cache files that can be deleted to solve the issue.
Since the last update, Appman throws up a Java error - not the first time I have seen this. The solution (on a dongle for me) - uninstall the sucker until the next update! Even before this I would get frequent "Appman has stopped working" error messages... not a great piece of software imho!
Vote 1 - Dongles.
UME an old engine, now with 4K, mags and furry dice....

the time you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted time...
We have systems on dongles and have simply uninstalled "Application Manager". Not sure if you can remove it is online licenced, but worth a try; one of the most useless pieces of software ever.
