Hi all,
Avid is offering Final Cut Pro users the opportunity to purchase the full, boxed version of Media Composer 5.5 (includes the Production Suite) for just $995 (USD) until June 17, 2011 — that’s over 60% off the regular price. This special promotional pricing is available through Avid resellers and the online Avid store with a valid Final Cut Pro/Studio proof of purchase (one FCP serial per Media Composer purchase).

This is sick! I have spent fortunes during the past 16 years supporting AVID and they give my opposition a discount....?
Experience cannot be taught or learnt!
They're trying to get new customers. It's a brilliant move on Avid's part.
they better should concentrate on keeping the old ones

I'm pretty sure you're getting a better deal on MC5.5 than an FCP user is getting.
There are going to be horrified cries from the FCP users at the still many omissions in Media Composer:
No dockable windows.
No secondary CC.
No 2 or 4K frame sizes.
No realtime scopes.
No 4:4:4 support.
No continuous playback while making adjustments.
No seamless installation or upgrading.
No support for the latest versions of videocards, drivers, OS's and Quicktime.
Current FCP users are going to have a lot of WTF moments. Maybe their voices will get Avid to change these omissions.
"When I spent 60k on a discreet edit digisuite system 10 years ago someone came up to me to offer fcp 2, I said it was a scam too." -Ric
Or they might be happy with:
- replace edit that actually works with merged clips
- autosync that doesn't cost an extra 500$
- read audio TC that doesn't cost an extra 250$
- tracking in the composer window
- garbage matte with unlimited points and bezier curves
- PC compatibility
- media management
- regular upgrades and bug fixes
- A company that actually cares about its customers and for whom postproduction is the core business
Anyway, i prefer to keep both softwares as they both have their strenghts
Of course Avid has its advantages. But its omissions are glaring to someone who hops on it from FCP, Vegas or Premiere.

The question is: how many folks are still either FCP or Avid? I think the idea is that most folks own and use both. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Sure, and FCP has some pretty glaring omissions as well. It all depends on what you want and what you need. For me it's heavy duty offline work for feature films, and Avid is perfect for that. But I appreciate the strengths of Final Cut Pro aswell. Competition is good, otherwise we probably wouldn't have had the Smart Tool or AMA on Avid.
But it's funny that Avid does the promo right now. Nobody will exchange FCP for Avid at least till tomorrow evening. Maybe after the Supermeet, a whole lot of FCP users will switch. Then again, maybe it will be the other way round
But me, I'm keeping both.

Um we are offering existing customers a great price.... if ou are on 5.0 which it appears that you are, we have an upgrade for approx. $150 US.... Thats a good deal.
What seems to be the issue here that I am missing?

Tom,
What seems to be the issue that has you so negative..... here to help but I can only do so if I know what the rub is.

Same goes for an MC user that jumps to FCP and realizes things arent there either. They both have their strengths and anyone that has both is better served in the market.
