Hello all:
After mixing-down audio and video I exported my first "real"(and paying) project -- about 20 minutes long --to QT-Reference (later to QT Movie, too, hoping to solve the problem that way). Upon launching AVID-DVD and successfully loading the media -- either QT Reference or Movie -- file in the "Pallet" I dragged it to the requisite "Title" icon in "Project" window. Subsequenly, each time a "FFdshow" window pops up -- I've tested all possible selections -- after which Windows prompts that AVID-DVD has encountered a problem and must shut down. Which, of course, it does. By-the-way, a week or so ago I successfully authored and burned a video-only "test" project using AVID-DVD. What gives? Your thoughts will be appreciated.
Regards,
Stuart
An addendum:
Figuring it was a possible solution, I unistalled AVID-DVD. No way of knowing: the intallation process now reports that the CD key is invalid. Now what?
Stuart,
Wish I'd seen your first post sooner. I had exactly the same problem with my software, was crashing all the time. Went to the sonic website to trouble shoot and they had a fix -- dropping a new .dll file into the system 32 folder. Seems to have solved my problem completely. Can't help you with the reinstall key though....
Jeff
The fix that worked for me last year was to go into regedit and delete everything that has to do with Sonic/Avid DVD. Once you do that, you can re-do the serial key.
Salud!
Thanks.
I'm not too confident about messing about in the Window's Registry, actually. But what i see in the Registry now is the "Sonic" folder with some empty sub-folders like " CommonMPEGDecorders" which itself has an empty sub- folder ("3.0") that has its own empty sub-folders ("AudioDecoder" and "Video Decoder") Conversely, there are files down the "tree a bit from "AuthorScript" and "Microsoft Windows MCE" inside folders called "PreferredDecorders" and "AC3Decoders". Whew, kinda' makes me dizzy! My question before I damage the OS with an importune deletion: do I delete just the files but keep the all Sonic folders or pitch the whole lot?
I have the MC5 zip file on my desk-top waiting for me to install. Will it be the solution, do you think?
What I did was delete the Sonic folder under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Sonic. You'll that there is an Activation folder. I deleted the whole Folder (Sonic Folder) AFTER I uninstalled AVID DVD. I think there is also a sonic removal tool, but it's been awhile.
Anyways, I hope that helps?
Also, I understand if you are nervous about using regedit. Just make a backup, try the edit, and if something doesn't work, then load your backup registry.Salud!
You might try a 'Restore' to July 1 (or whatever date is the last one it had a good register), then do the correction as noted...

Hi,
I replied to something similar a few posts ago.
I'm pretty sure the problem is with the current Quicktime version. I had constant shut downs saying something about a Exception:ADVAudioDev Audio underrun on DV Device". The FFShow I think is from Adobe & it can cause upside down imports into SonicDVD. I deleted FFShow from Control Panel & had Sorenson convert my Quicktime Reference file into a highy quality MPEG2. That is the file I import into Sonic/AvidDVD, I had no crashes since & my DVD looked very good. If it's not your Quicktime then I'd suspect FFShow. I had it installed with CS4, but since I don't use any programs that require it, it was ok to dump it. I had been using Sonic without any problems on my past Avid revs or QT versions- ergo... Quicktime because I updated to 7.6.6 when I upgraded to MC5. Last note, the MPEG2 did not have to be retranscoded in Sonic so the burn time isn't too bad at all.

I haven't yet but I'm going to dive into the Windows Registry and hope for the best. I'm a little baffled why such a common thing like reinstallation requires such an arcane tap-dance to to accomplish, though. Or am I being too picky?
Just a side note from a Liquid migrant to pass along a bit of Avid-ish irony: without a functional AvidDVD I turned to Liquid (which I've kept on my machine, MC notwithstanding -- fortunately as it turns out) to author a DVD, which I was subsequently, and happily, able to deliver to my client on time. Pretty sad, too: poor-old-clunky Liquid had to rescue big-bad MC.
I still wonder whether or not installing MC5 will also reinstall AvidDVD?
Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
Hello again:
I'm a bit red-faced. The reinstallation difficulty was overcome by deleting one (one!) -- and patently obvious --folder in the Windows Registry. To wit: "DVDit" located in HKEY_CURRENT USER/Sonic/Activation. I have Avid-DVD back, Hooray! When I drag an asset to the Title icon Windows still announces that the program has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, and does -- but, by golly, it's loaded!
I'm going to noodle around Roxio's website (Selfserve.Roxio.com) to see if they have a fix before I uninstall "ffdshow" as suggested. What does "ffdshow" do for Avid-DVD, anyway? Do I need it? By-the-way, where would I locate "ffdshow" for a reinstall if removing it does something sour?
FFShow was loaded on my system by Adobe Encoder. It came with CS4 & I don't use it because I use Sorenson Squeeze, so I didn't have a problem taking it off my computer. I learned about removing it from a post here on the Forum. That post said FFShow had nothing to do with MC & was safe to remove.
Since QT Ref. seems to have a problem in Avid DVD (crashing) since MC5 I switched to importing a MPEG2- but the MPEG2 was upside down until I took FFShow off. The QTR problem still exisits but the MPEG2 burn in Avid DVD looked excellent! I have had FFshow removed for two Avid projects and it hasn't caused any problem at all (for me anyway).

Leo, it was a lot of compability probs with Avid when CS4 was released, they actually had to release a CS 4,1 to make things working.
I think that your probs just are compability probs and a to many apps installed problem, start with a clean OS and a clean install, install Avid, start with installing other apps, do some tests between the installs and when it breaks something, just go back

FFshow is used by a lot of software, including K-LiteCodec Pack. You can prevent Avid DVD, or any software from using it.
Under All Programs look for ffdshow, select Video Decoder configuration. When the Config window opens click on DirectShow control in the left window.
Next place a check in the box beside "Don't use ffdshow in:"
Click on "Edit" and browse to the folder that contains the Avid DVD by Sonic.exe file. Select open to add it to the list and then click on "Apply"
This will prevent upside down footage inside Avid DVD.
Hope this helps some.

Yes, it comes together with Sorenson squeeze too, with the difference that Squeeze is certified to be used together with MC and also brought with the bundle.
Gerry, about that K-lite codec pack, it gives me the creeps, can´t help it, unknown codecs is my greatest fear.
A summarize, from my view of it, is to never install other codecs than the ones brought together with your ( expensive ) editing application, free codecs are just that, you get what you pay for ...

Tomas,
I don't have it on my PC, but we have it installed on most of our Office PCs at work. I only mentioned it here because I know that a lot of people think that you can't have enough codecs on your system to play back videos - and then don't even know what is running where and when during playback/render.
Being used and installed by Squeeze still doesn't help if you don't know how to control it with other software.
That's the reason for my Tip in my post.
