I have two XW8400s which I'm ready to upgrade from XP to Windows 7, add 8GB RAM and upgrade from MC4 to MC5.
On the System Requirements page everything for this config looks good. The XW8400 is not on the No Longer Supported Systems list for MC5.
However, the Readme file bundled with the MC5 download only lists Windows XP 32 and Windows Vista 64 as Supported OS. Some other systems specifically list Windows 7 64 as being supported, so it looks like Windows 7 was intentionally left off of the XW8400 list.
So what are we to make of this? My instinct tells me that my plans are ok and the upgrade will work fine. But I'd hate to get through an OS & RAM upgrade only to find that MC won't work properly anymore.
Ideas? Thanks in advance.
Bob
I remember reading somewhere that it is supported, but they need to update it in the .pdf files. MC5 is flying high on my XW8400!
Mine too, with an Analog Mojo.

That's very good news to hear. Thanx!
Oh, and I just popped in an FX4800 ... whoo hoo!
It is not supported and the readme documents 6/16/10 have been updated to reflect this.
In agreement, Unity. In Disagreement, Discussion. In all things, Charity.
Given that there are a whole lot of xw8400’s out there that are demonstrably up to the task of MC5 in most outward appearances, and a lot of unhappy users who feel as if they will be “stuck” with XP, it might be helpful if the update were to state *why* the box is excluded, without making any suggestion or commitment. I understand that it is because it is reaching EOL with HP, who will not be supporting it for Win7. That, of course, may or may not be a significant factor from the point of view of actual user experience, which will be the final judge, even though it is unquestionably correct from Avid’s point of view. Considering that Vista64 and 7 are kissing cousins, it is reasonable to expect that it will run just fine. (I have one running with Win7-64, and it rocks.) On a machine that is on less critical jobs, I don’t believe that Win7 should be overly discouraged. As long as the customer knows the possibility of support problems, she/he should feel free to try it. No one who is running Win7 would possibly want to go back to the dark ages of XP; it is that much more fun.
All of this to suggest that users should not be led to believe that there is some known, critical problem with the mix, just that Avid cannot support what HP no longer will, for obvious, though minor reasons. If the user is the type who can do hers/his/theirs/its own support, go for it, and the odds are strongly in favor of a cheerful experience. Mine has been, without a hiccup.

Ready?
It's not supported because the manufacturer (HP) will not support that OS on that Box. If they did, we would have an easier time.
So thats its?
Just cus HP doesn't want or "support" on the hpxw8400?
thats why it says we should run MC5 on an 8400 with "only Vista 64 or XP 32"?
I have an xw8400 and have been thinking about upgrading to both windows 7 AND MC5... then i saw the "vista 64 and XP32 only" on the workstation qualifications list and got scared...Cus i thought my CPU would blow up and AVID not run correctly... But if all it means is that i can't call up AVID for support.. then we'll big boo.. i'll just find support some other way...
Brutus, so you have an 8400 as well? and you installed windows 7 and MC5 on it? How is it running for you?
I've got one MC5 on Win7 Pro 64bit on an XW8400. Works fine.
I have Win7 64bit installed with MC5, Dual-Quad, 12g RAM. So far, it runs without flaw - perfectly - but then, MC5 hasn't been out long enough for any final verdict. I am assuming that it will not be a problem, since there is not that much unter-the-hood difference between Win7-64 and Vista-64. Nevertheless, HP's decision to not support the xw8400 on Win7 makes it prudent for Avid to follow suit IMHO. If they support it now, and some change causes incompatibility in the future, Avid would be backed into a corner with respect to support. I expect that the only reason that HP won't support it is because it is old enough to be classified as "legacy" (just as anything older than a new-born babe is these days). They are "clearing their books" as it were.
Still, I personally don't anticipate any fatal problems, and if such a thing should occur, then I will upgrade to a newer, supported unit, which will be considerably cheaper as time goes by.
The only loss is support, which in nine years I have never needed. If you can solve your own problems, why not stick with the tried and true for the time being, and let the problems shake out with the new, supported units, because there certainly will be issues. Upgrade when the price is down and the reliability is up.
