Re: Improved AVCHD to Media Composer Workflow

Not sure if this would help...but recently had some AVCHD footage that I had to use...and had very few tools to use (was a temporary room set up in Whistler for the Olympics).

I brought the AVCHD footage into After Effects CS4....dropped it onto a timeline (was cool because I could remove everything I didn't want), then just rendered out to a DNXHD codec and fast imported into Avid. It was from a Canon camcorder (sub 1000$ camcorder). The footage looked great...better than HDV that we had captured HD SDI... The caveat is that all metadata is lost, but the upswing was being able to choose excatly what I encoded. The render was also quite quick (didn't time it, as I let it work in background)

Re: Improved AVCHD to Media Composer Workflow

I know this is an old post, but I have a question:

I'm using the GH1 (GH13 hack) neoscene --> metafuze workflow; however, when I use media tool and pull the .mxf files in,  the blacksand overall image looks washed out (contrast is low). I've been importing the converted neoscene files directly into avid instead of metafuze and the colors are richer and the contrast is like the original file.

Am I choosing the wrong settings in metafuze? I'm just selecting 1080p 23.976 (metafuze starts out as 24p) and the metafuze preview window show the output is identical to the Cineform codec.

Any help? Oh, I'm using DNxHD 115 as recommended by the Videoguys

    Salud!

Re: Improved AVCHD to Media Composer Workflow

    Hi,

Can you advise or direct me on solving my AVCHD transcoding issue please?

System: HP xw8400, (1)Xeon 5160, Nvidia Quadro 3500, 2tb video storage, WinXP Pro.
    Camera: Panasonic AG-HMC150.
    AVID MC 5.5.3
In the past I used the Panasonic free Media Concepts transcoder to convert my AVCHD files
to DVCPro an Avid usable format.

Now I want to use the workflow you describe with NeoScnen & Metafuze.
    Here is my dilema.

I downloaded Neo Player and installed.
Then purchased NeoScene v5.5.4 and installed.
Transcoded my AVCHD files via NeoScene to .AVI files.
They play normally with my Nero Kwik player.

(I noticed the .AVI files, via AMA, will load in my Avid project bin but
in playback I get dual images.  So no good will not do again.)

Next, I opened Avid Metafuze and scanned the folder with my
NeoScene converted .AVI files.  Metafuze shows them loaded
in sequence, but, I cannot see the files in the Metafuze placback windows.

When I try to play them I can not see the file in Metafuze.
It loads the file but Metafuze cannot see or play the .AVI files.
I even tried to transcode in Metafuze but it failed, did not work.  Sad

Why can't Metafuze play the files, it scanned them?  In the manual it shows a
scanned file with the before and after transcode image.  So I was
expecting to see the same.  So far nothing is shown.

I have tried to make Metafuze work many times just to be sure I did not miss a step.
Do you think there is a codec issue, perhaps a conflict with NeoPlayer installed with NeoScene?

I'm open to any and all suggestions you may have.
I wonder what the key is in my setup for Metafuze to see and transcode my NeoScene .AVI files?
There must be something that will make this workflow from AVCHD to editable by Avid?

Thank you for your time and thought.

Re: Improved AVCHD to Media Composer Workflow

    Hey,

don't use Metafuze, LInk AMA your Cineform (neoscene codec) .avi's into oyur project, then "select all" and transcode them to whicjever DNxHD codec of your liking. Once transcoded, delete teh AMA cineform files and edit your DnxHD files.

AMA is way sluggish to edit, that's why you should transcode them to DNxHD for snoother editing.

    Brian Suttie:
I have tried the trail of AVCHD Upshift. It loks to me that the black levels of the fast imported files are a bit gray.

"black" in AVCHD, XDCAM or any other, as defined by level "16" (in 8 bit), is always displayed by Avid as "gray" on computer monitors (16-16-16 gray). only on actual HDSDI broadcast monitor is "16" displayed as real black.

only for fullscreen playback, there is an option to display (video-)black (16) as real black, not gray, called "Expand Luminance for Computer Display", but it doesn't seem to work.

Re: Improved AVCHD to Media Composer Workflow

I have a couple of questions then on this,

Videoguy - the info on your website for Cineform doesn't list MC as one of the compatible NLE's, Since it is just doing conversion, the NLE doesn't matter that much right? As long as it is converting to a codec the NLE can handle right?

For MC folks - is the codec for playing back this codec (Cineform) in MC? I have 5.0.4. Or do I need to get it somewhere?

    Thanks,

Yes, Cineform works with Avid. The last version they list as supported in v5, but I am not aware of any new issues with MC6.
