Not that this will solve the original poster's question but I have done some research and........
Version 6.1 of AvidDVD should work with either a dongle-activated or a software-activated Media Composer.
Version 6.0 will only work with a dongle-activated sytem.

It doesn't work with the dongle, it tries to go on the web and activate! If only I could download 6.0 from Avid....
Roxio support is of no help....
I have MC 4.02 and AVID DVD 6.1 with the dongle. Software activation is not working on my end for AVID DVD 6.1, since everytime I try, it keeps getting an "Invalid product Key" when trying to activate it over the internet. During instillation, I use teh key that is provided on teh CD sleeve.
I also did a web registration with Sonic and still the same problem. Sonic told me, that since it's an AVID related product, I have to contact Avid.
Just updating everyone...SAlud!
Hello Wil and Robert,As I am still on MC 3.1.2 and have AvidDVD 6.0 installed, I cannot test to see what happen on my setup. The information I posted above came from Avid via Marianna.
I would suggest that you send Marianna an email pointing out that you are not getting AvidDVD to run as expected. I am sure that she will look into it as soon as she has the time.
You can email her at [email protected]
Good luck,Douglas
No problem, I did email Marianna, she replied, but I think everyone (Avid and Sonic) is still stumped at the moment. No worrires, I know there will be an answer soon - Salud!

Isn't supposed to "kill" the dongle before you use the online activation?

Hello,
I took the Dongle out and the same results happened. From the email Marianna sent me, it shouldn't matter if the dongle is plugged in or out. Avid DVD 6.1 is contacting Sonic servers for the activation, so there is something going on with the key provided with the 3rd party software and the Sonic servers.
Salud!
Any further advances on this since OCT 09?
I am also suffering invalid product key.
I have unisntalled, edited rgistries to remove all traces and ..well..Its a big fat no go still.
In addition I have tried to contact Sonic Support on the only number we can find (in the Avid knowledgebase) and of course that only works for US. It seems invalid for us less golden haired children overseas.

Hey,
wow, it's been awhile and I was on XP wehn I had this issue, but here goes:
The culprit was that the old serial was still in my registry (or from another Sonc product), and that's why the new serial for 6.1 wasn't working. I had to remove everything that had to do with SONIC on my computer - but most importantly, I had to delete everything in my registry to remove the old serial.
Just REGEDIT and find all cases of sonic DVD and serials....that's what worked for me, I believe.
Everytime I was doing online activatio or putting in the serial, it was referring to the old one in my registry - let me know if that worked!
We had the same error on our Windows 7 Pro machine. After installing DVD by Sonic and starting it, it asks for activation what ends up in the already posted "Invalid product key" error.
So here's the solution:
Use the compatibiloty check option on Windows 7 and run Sonic in XP SP3 mode - then activation works like a charm and everythings fine now ;)
Hope this helps some people out here ;)
I have just hit this same problem.
Never installed the program at all (mainly mac oriented) but decided to try it after having issues with Encore. Installing on an older Dell PC with XP loaded.
Tried the reg edit route (sort of) as I had a very old Sonic DVD authoring tool on there once.
Any new ideas on this before I ping Marianna?
Thanks,
Jef

Here's what I did to get to work:
http://tinyurl.com/at7qlac
What happened was i had another Sonic product on my machine that was interfering with the Avid DVD (Sonic) activation.
I know, finicky, but this usually happned with all my Sonic products.
Hope this helps?
Thanks for the info.
My situation is complicated by the fact that the workstation I wish to install Avid DVD on also has audio tools by Sonic Foundry!!!!
This really complicates any searching in the registry.
But I really wonder if the problem is greater than what you suggest. If you read the following:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Compatibility/en263635
there is a a web site which should allow you to do an activation for a machine not connected to the internet. Well, this website seems dead, leading me to wonder if all activation severers are dead.
Yeah, maybe ping Marianna. Sonic/Roxio activation has always been finicky. Hope you get it resolved, man.

Well Marinanna gave me a new code to try. No good.
I tried the reg cleaning instructions posted above. Nope.
Has anyone had any luck with the following:
The web link in that doc seems dead to me with either Firefox or Safari. I wonder if there is a problem on the Sonic side now that they have been sold so many times.
