Edit:
Hi,
Strange issue that I cannot get to the bottom of. I have a sequence with some Sapphires and other effects in it. Editor complained that he cannot do an expert render but a full render works with out issue. This would suggest there is a corrupt effect in there but all the divide and conquer and proving unsuccessful.
Even going to a section where there are no effects and marking in and out still give the same error when trying to do an expert render, not ever a frame! We've tried on several machines and it still the same. Media Composer 2022. 4, 2022.7 and 2022.12.7 have been tested. Sapphires versions are matched.
The error is "Some effects are not recognized and will not be rendered. Do you want to continue?" Clicking continue lists it only rendering 3 of 1000 odd effects. It can't be a missing plugin in my mind as the full render works without issues. We tried clearing all renders and it's still the same.
Any help or advise please, thank you,
Rory
Edit: Fixed the formatting.
Are you sure there are not any stray effects in there? Possibly audio? You could try typing "dumpfxsummary" in to the console and this will list all effects used in the sequence. You may spot one from there. Normally an unrecognised effect will have a blank icon - are there any in the sequence?
My other advice is just do a full render if that works, real time effects wouldn't take much time to render, it would only be things like Sapphire that would need a full render and that would be happening with an expert render anyway, I doubt you're saving much time by ignoring the real time stuff.
You can always modify the clips that expert render chooses using the "modify selection" button and shift+clicking the effects you don't want to include in order to, for example, only expert render Sapphire effects but that sounds like a lot of faff when you could just render the whole thing.

The answer is "just do a full render" but that does not seem to satisfy the client, so I just thought I'd ask here in case the answer is simple. It is odd though, the assistant cut all the audio off and it was still the same error and then cut all the video off, same again.
This would suggest the sequence is sick to me, so create a new sequence and cut everything over but it is still the same. :/ In regards to dumpfxsummary, if a full render works surely that implies all the effects are accounted for? Cannot see any blank effect icons but only after a brief scan, again I feel this should error in full render too if that was the case though
We are only short of being asked to pick each effect off one by one and try and try again...life is too short for that!
Here is the fxdump, nothing looks out of place to me:

Yeah, weird. Only thing I'd note from this is the presence of nested effects. Have you stepped in to those ones? Avid always did have trouble rendering things inside a nested stack.
What happens if you manually render those effects after stepping in and then step out and try another expert render?
Clients being unreasonable? Never!
I've done a full render in to out and then change an effect ever so slightly and tried an expert render and I still get the same issue. I just though I'd ask. And I learned about dumpfxsummary and dumpfxlocation and that you have to shift click when modifying the clip renders so it wasn't a wasted effort.
Thanks for the reply,
A bit off topic, but I have to ask...what does the client care what type of render you do as long as the show plays out properly?
Honestly i rarely worry about render time any more. Everything is soooo much faster than it was 30, or ev 20 years ago.
