    Avid Media Files Location 2023

Hi, I'm used to working on a Nexis however I'm in between jobs and taking the time to get to know Avid 2023.

Just imported some footage and the Avid Media Files folder is now located in the users > shared > Avid Media Composer folder... didn't it used to be located in Documents?

Can I move the AMF folder to the documents folder?

    Thanks

You can have it whereever you want it to be, or multiple instances of as well.

Maybe without a dedicated, assigned location, it 'might' default to where you found it, but it's best practice for it to not live on your main OS drive. If you do not have an second drive, you're welcome to create a new one whereever you want, such as in /user/documents.

One of the VERY FIRST things you should do when creating a new project, is specifying the AMF folder location.

Thanks Jason, seems that with Avid Ultimate and newer OS releases the AMF folder no longers exists at the root of the boot drive but within the shared folder and no option to move it whereever you want

I am in between shows doing some loose testing at home and without an external drive

    Woooooooaaaaa

I feel like Rip Van Winkle here.

Am I reading this correctly that as of some version of MC starting in the MC2023 family that "Avid MediaFiles/MXF/xxx" folders are no longer required to be at the root level of a drive?  And that you can set where the drive will be in some menu?

Michael Freedman says that this in Avid Ultimate.  Does that mean ONY?

And where do I find the readme and documentation of this?

Or am I just going MORE crazy?

    Jef:

One with time might be so inclined to experiment... I should assume this only applies to NOT using a drive other than the OS (I wouldn't know 'coz I've only EVER used a non-OS drive), and that this behavior has more to do with Apple's lock-down of the boot volume -- so it's a work-around of sorts.

I feel like I read something about this along the way, but didn't cook it given I NEVER store media files on my boot drive. I would guess on any OTHER drive, the AMF folder still needs to be at the root.

Looking back, guess I should have said: "it can be on any drive, as long it's not the boot drive, and it's located on the root level." As far as the boot drive, perhaps I led the OP astray, and it DOES need to live in that shared user location due to Apple's lock-down, but maybe someone wants to see if it can function elsewhere (like /user/documents). Pretty sure I saw a preference that allows you to specify that. I'll try to look before my session in the morning and report back.

    Michael:

Okay, I've led you astray, I cannot locate any preference that allows you to control the path when trying to use the AMF folder on the OS volume in a location other than user/shared/MediaComposer. I think I was conflating that setting with the various "Cache" preferences.

    My apologies for my poor-advice.

It is not possible to Move Avid MediaFiles databases. They will always be located at the root level of your drive UNLESS you transcode to your C drive. The default location for MediaFiles databases on the C drive is: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1

Jason was technically right but in the wrong environment.

This is possible in an Media Central Production Management (interplay) environment where you have Media Indexer servers scanning Nexis workspaces

Re: Avid Media Files Location 2023

    Hi everyone,

To be clear, in an MacOS environment, the path for the media files is: C\Users\Shared\\AvidMediaComposer\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1

There are two folders inside Shared that can be confused. One is called Avid Media Composer (by default it is empty) and the other one is AvidMediaComposer where you can find all the shared folders as the Avid MediaFiles, the Avid Users. Avid Attic, etc.
