    SD output incorrect

    MC ver 2023.12

    I have a sequence from the 30i NTSC preset (720x486)  4:3

When I render out a MXF OP1a ProRes file, the result is a file that is 720x496 Top Field first.

    Hi Jef,

I created a case for you so that the team check and assist you on this one.

For reference your case number is 04735594

    Thanks,

Yeah, SD export is messed up it seems.

I jumped into a new SD project for you to confirm, and indeed, my OP1a export is the same as yours.

Curiously (and certainly a bug) if you choose to export a "MOV" instead, you LOSE the option to select ProRes as a Codec, and all the framerates are hosed (only progressive rates appear). If you ALSO attempt to change "Preset" from "Custom" to say, NTSC 720x486, then it breaks the "Aspect Ratio" selection, and then only MJPEG appears as the only codec, and 59.94i is the only interlaced option available. ALSO, the MOV export window displays 720x496 as the project raster.

Glad I don't EVER have to export interlaced SD anymore, because it seems it's all kinds of wonky.

    Re: SD output incorrect

Being in the UK I've never had to deal with 30fps or fractional frame rates. If memory serves me well, PAL SD exports at 50i (720x576) were always upper/odd field first, and this is what the UK broadcasters wanted.

I was aware that this was different for the US at 29.97, but was this also true at 30fps?

Have you tested at 29.97 to see if this exports lower field first?

    That is an under statement!!!

I noticed all this as well.  It was too depressing for me to even begin to write out.  Thanks for doing that.

Believe it or not, some of us deal with SD on a regular basis.  Thankfully, I was able to make an AAF of what I needed and took it into both Resolve and Premiere Pro.  Interestingly, Premiere did a better job of handling the specific codec (DV that Avid decided to call DVC Pro).  Resolve could see it but was having issues with the PAR.

Avid just becomes less and less useful.

    Hi Bruno,

Frame rate was not the issue here.  To your question, I have never had to actually deal with true 30fps.  Always the fractional versions.  This all came about with the development of color video needing to be compatible with the original B&W system.

My issue was the raster dimensions of the export.  They were WAY off.  The comment of field order was just info.  Avid does not seem to show the field order in metadata.  Only Interlaced versus Prog.

I noticed too. The dismal thought prevented me from writing. I appreciate that. SD affects some of us regularly. Thankfully, I could build an AAF and import it into Resolve and Premiere Pro. Premiere handled DV (which Avid renamed DVC Pro) better. Though Resolve could see it, the PAR was problematic.
