    Correct display of 4:3 footage

What is the correct way of importing 4:3 footage into a 16:9 project? I want it to display pillarboxed, ie in the original aspect ratio with black bars each side. At the moment it shows on the timeline as anamorphic, ie squashed picture filling the screen. I can apply the resize effect to restore the correct aspect ratio, but I fear that squashing the pixels and then re-extending them is degrading picture quality. Is there a better workflow? I am using MC version 2018.12.3

    Have you tried using Frameflex?

Not used 4x3 material in decades but I would have thought the pillarbox/letterbox option in Frameflex would get you there.

Bruno is correct.  FrameFlex is the way to go.  Unfortunately it is horribly unintuitive.  Not in front of a system now, but you should at least read about FrameFlex in the documentation.

In the online help doc search for "Reformatting the Media to fit the Project Frame Size"

FrameFlex is a good option and you have the most chance of it being accuarte given it can account for SD Pixel Aspect Ratio.

But if you wanted to use a Resize effect instead you can set Scaling to X=75, Y=100.
