    Relink - linked media fail?

    2023.3.1

Trying to relink Linked media that is on an external drive.  When I choose the offline clip and attempt to relink, I can not find a way to choose the external drive.  I only see the system drive.

What format is the external drive?

Can you see the external drive in Finder? Does it have any icon on the drive or folders, such as a 'No Entry' type icon?

Can you copy a file across to the external drive?

Under 'Properties', does the drive have full read & and write set for everyone?

The drive is ExFat and is seen in all other MC functions.

Get info says I have "custom access".

Re: Relink - linked media fail?

I'm wondering if this custom access could be a problem.

I would try giving full read/write access to 'everyone'. Also remember to “Apply to enclosed items”.

Here's an Apple user guide on how to do this...

I am not sure how to change permissions on a n ExFat drive in mac.  There is no way that I can see.  Your link did not seem to apply.

Don't know what you mean by 'did not seem to apply'.

The support page I linked you to explains exactly what to do.

Well, I can not click open "Sharing and Permissions" on that drive.  Other drives I can.  I am stumped.

Re: Relink - linked media fail?

I am wondering if that is because it is ExFat.

Re: Relink - linked media fail?

I guess that's possible. Can't say I've tried this with ExFAT drives. I assume you're either in an Admin account or you've clicked on the 'lock' icon to unlock the settings?

I've done this with Mac formatted external drives in the past.

Does a Google search bring up anything?

We often come across this permission issue when students copy some media from their laptops to our media drives. It's got something to do with file/folder ownership and the type of accounts the students have (NOT Admin accounts).

I would think the only way to see if it's a problem with the formattting is to copy the ExFAT contents to another (Mac formatted) drive.

Late to table here and didn't read all posts, but if you are using the "newish" relink tool with the little browser window, drag your volume from the finder into the window and you'll be able to use the drive. This stumped me, too, until someone else discovered the secret.

    Well THAT is obvious. NOT.

Will try when I get back to this.  Thanks.

The interesting thing about this is you'd THINK that you'd have to do it for every new volume you want to add to the list, but no, once initiated with an external volume, it seems to work for all volumes going forward.

    Hi J.

Can you elaborate on what you mean? I have the same problem. Moved all content from my editing disk to new external disk and can't link my MXFs.

For relinking LINKED media (by using the newish "Linked Media" tool as opposed to the older means) when your external volumes don't appear as a source:

Right-click whatever you're trying to Relink. Select "Relink..." "Linked Media."

In the first window, select clip(s) and click the "Locate Media" button at the bottom-right.

In the next "Select a Folder" window, if your external volume doesn't appear in the list on the left, drag your volume Icon FROM FINDER into this window.
