Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

    Hello,
I'm trying to import titles made with Photoshop with alpha channel but there is no way to get the alpha channel. I tried to import psd, tiff, png (all with an alpha channel), but nothing works. Itride linking and transcode as well but no luck.
I usually import selecting "invert on import (white=opaque)", but I also tried "do not invert". I tried to import the psd flattening the image or selecting the single alpha channel layer but nothing appear to work.
All I get is a pitch black image (matte key) when I import a png or a psd just selecting the alpha channel layer; or the full image without transparency when I import the psd flattening the image.

    Can someone please help?

    Hi george 777,

I'm not able to reproduce this on my own system.  I'm running a much later Mac OS and Media Composer version than you, but I also don't recall encountering the issue you have back in the day...

Can you upload an example graphic file for me to test?

Re: Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

Rather than creating an alpha channel, try exporting a PNG with a transparent background.

Then import in the usual way with the alpha option set.

I've found that the transparent backgound is interpreted as an alpha channel by Avid.

this is especially useful if you have objects with semi tranparent edges (like drop shadows) which would need to be reproduced in the alpha channel.

Re: Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

    Hi Mikey,

I can't import any alpha chsnbel of any images. Psd, png, tiff...

The layer with the alpha channel is black.

If I import the psd flattening the image, I see the image but I don't gabe the alpha channel.

if i import the layer with the alpha, I see a pith black image.

AFAIK this isn't a known bug or limitation of your version of Media Composer. So there's something peculiar/unusual happening.

I presume this has worked OK in the past on your system?

Have you tried the standard troubleshooting measures of creating a new User Setting, and a new Project?

I'm with the other poster: I've NEVER seen this behavior, I, too can test the file if you submit it.

Re: Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

For the last 10 months I've benn using a new computer. Last time I've imported titles with alpha channel was in my old system. Everything works fine, this is the first issue I'm having.

I didn't try to create a new user setting and a new project. I will and I'll let you know.

The files works fine in Resolve, with alpha and everything.

I alreday had people testing the files and they are fine. The issue is media composer.

Yes, I tried creating both a new project and new user settings. Nothing happened, same problem.

I suggest you submit your psd file as well as any resultant export you are trying to import in AViD. I'd be happy to take a look.

Re: Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

Just an idea: I notice you're running on Mojave, which was the last Mac OS to have a 'proper' QT infrastructure.  But you've got a relatively new version of Media Composer installed, which would normally be on a later Mac OS. I checked the Version Matrix, and your combo is ok, but I just wonder if the MC version isn't totally 'happy'.

There's a supplementary installer available, called Legacy Components, which adds back into MC some components that might be helpful. Sorry I don't know which version of Legacy Components you might need, but it might be worth digging around in the Download Centre and trying it out. I don't think installing it can do any harm either way.

Re: Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

Has the particular file worked with Media Composer before?

Did you create it from scratch or was it made by someone else?

    Have you checked

    - Mode (8/16/32 bit, RGB/CMYK/Lab etc.)

    - Additional alpha channels (besides layer transparency)

    - Embedded color profile

    Cutyes:

I'm having problem, with ALL .png and .psd with transparency.

Not only the file I create or the files delivered to me in this project.

I'm working with a version of MC installed from scratch on a new computer one year ago. Last upgrade was 10.2022.

This is the first time I needed titles with alpha, so I don't know if the problem was there from the beginning or if it happened on my 10.2022 upgrade.

What do you mean about additional alpha channels and embedded color profile?
Do you mean make changes on the MC import of on Photoshop?

Re: Photoshop titles import but no alpha channel

By 'additional alpha channels' I mean alpha channels that affect an image as a whole and would appear in the "Channels" palette (in Photoshop: Window > Channels)

By 'embedded color profile" I mean color profiles that can be assigned to an image (in Photoshop: Edit > Assign Profile)

Unusual modes, profiles or unnoticed alpha channels can lead to unwanted results - or just errors - when imported with Media Composer. But since you seem having trouble with all kinds of graphics, I guess, the cause will be something else.
