Chris Bové:It's not a question of relationships being positive or negative, but rather just a whole different set of criteria, bugs, and items on a list to work through. It's scheduling, testing, communication, testing, qulity reviews, testing, syncing schedules between two companies, and oh did I mention testing? :)
Hi Chris,
Thank you for confirming this is about testing.
A few posts back I wrote:
Jeroen van Eekeres: Who is responsible for compatibility testing of I/O hardware in 2024? Does Avid still do testing of their part of the integration and certify drivers of Aja and Blackmagic? Up to January 2023 you sold rebranded Blackmagic and Aja I/O under the Avid name and still have the drivers available in the download center. Also in the readme it says: • Avid Artist DNxIO and Avid Artist DNxIQ: If you are using Avid Artist DNxIO, Avid Artist DNxIQ, or a BlackMagic Designs video device, please update to Desktop Video software version v12.4 or higher. If you are using Avid Artist DNxIV and Avid Artist DNxIP please update to AJA software v16.2.2 or later. Should customers be aware that since Avid discontinued selling I/O boxes in 2023 it also discontinued all testing of Media composer with any I/O device?

So I repeat the question. Who is responsible for compatibility testing of I/O hardware in 2024? Does Avid still do testing of their part of the integration and certify drivers of Aja and Blackmagic?

Supported kernels older than 3.12 require an extra step after plugging the device in. You must tell the kernel to rescan the PCI bus using the following command:
# sudo sh -c 'echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan'
Kernel 3.12 and later support hotplug without the need for any extra steps.
Several different package formats are supplied:
Full release notes including installation instructions are available in the ReadMe.txt found in the downloadable tar archive.

Yes! This driver is much more stable on Mac silicone.
Test without digital audio scrub on first.

Let me know how it goes, any issues feel free to email me or Marianna. I would test on 23.8.2 as that version does not suffer from the digital audio scrub bug which is on the cusp of being fixed.
Lots of us - nervous about disturbing the almost functional setups we have - would really appreciate reports on how this new driver is working on Mac Silicon instalations, my particular interest is in how it's working with MacStudio. Posting full info about your configuration would be really helpful.
Yes this fixes the hangs with MC but........ the audio scrub bug is on our side and being fixed and hopefully next release.
Marianna
23.12 is my current test build, as I really need the new batch import/reimport function to finally move the last holdovers from MC2018.12.
I just tried this new driver. Fixes nothing for me. Trimming was clunky till it crashed. Maybe I'm doing something wrong....
Beachballed in five minutes. Tested it with Avid DNX ID and Ultrastudio 3G. Back to working in full screen mode. If anyone gets this working please let us know......

Just reporting that this "fix" fixes nothing for us. We're still getting beachball spinning whenever working in full-res which leads to force-quitting the app, playback in lower resolutions is not solid and everytime we stop playback the client monitor flashes a black frame.
I am not shooting the messenger here and thank you Marianna for the years and years of patience but this is just unacceptable. My company pays Avid thousands of dollars a year in software licensing fees and maintenance on our NEXIS and for what? Do you want to know how I screen in my studio? I render out a full res sequence and puts it in DaVinci Resolve, we go through the cut, I take notes, then go back to MC to continue working on the cut. This is PATHETIC.
Additionally, I connect remotely to compeltely different edit station, in a completely different location, on a machine that isn't connected to any I/O hardware and the MC on that computer is also super glitchy. Something is wrong with Avid.
After installing the new driver from BMD I still got the warning that Avid Technology has loaded system extensions on my Mac which will be incompatible with future versions. This is the only software the elicits this prompt. Not BMD, not Adobe, not the many other apps we're running to support production. None.
We are switching to either Resolve or Premiere.

We thoroughly tested Media Composer 2023.8.2 and the new BMD Desktop Video Setup12.8 DL6580 RC3 in our labs - we had a Mac machine running for five days straight, trimming, moving clips around, loop playing overnight. We experienced next to no issues.
Some of my customers report that this new combination has helped a lot, and the issue has ceased to exist. Other customers report this hasn't fixed the issues at all.
This info has passed through to our devs (specifically on MCCET-5207), and I am awaiting an update.
For the time being, an alternative is to plug an external monitor into the system directly and use Full-Screen Playback

Which remote solution are you using? I am happy to investigate this further if you wish.
I did perform a clean install of MEdia Composer before usng the latest BMD driver. My experience is that it's working now. sometimes I glet a glitch on the sound after 90 secs approx, but the avid still plays in sync.
Nims:We're still getting beachball spinning whenever working in full-res which leads to force-quitting the app, playback in lower resolutions is not solid
I used to get a corrupt project caused by the endless Beachballing and force quitting. You might try creating a new project and copying all the bins over and see if that clears this problem. This might also be causing the problem on your remote avid as well.
Nims:everytime we stop playback the client monitor flashes a black frame.
There is a setting in the BMD video output where you can select displays freeze frame on output, rather than display black output. It might be worth checking this.

I'm on 14.2.1 I dont get this message, what vesion of MacOS are you on
St.John
I hope this helps

Thank you! I had this issue, and your suggestion was spot on. In the Blackmagic settings, Video Output > Video Playback, you can choose Display freeze Frame when not playing, and there is no longer black frames at the end of playbacks, which was quite annoying.
Otherwise, after a short limited test period on my workstation, the new BM driver seems solid with MC 2023.12.1 on MacOS 13.6.4.
