    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

I am now trying to connect using 10GB Myricom Card (10GB SFP) to Dell Force 10 S25 (10GB XFP) but no activity showing on Dell XPF indicator light.

I have chosen single chassis to router and 10GB in storage manager and it assigns 192.168.255.17 Then i connect a client 1GB to Dell port 1 with address 192.168.255.25 and nothing.

I'm aslo aware there is a config file for the S25 with the ISIS installer but i cabn't find anything about how to install it to the switch

    Thank you

    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

First thing to check. Can you see a faint red light inside each XFP/SFP+ in one hole? And when connecting the LC-LC on either side can you see the same red light come out on the other side? You could also use a phone camera to see infrared light. The LC-LC cable needs to connect the light producing output of the XFP/SFP to the none light producing input. So you might need to swap in/out on one side of the LC-LC cable.

On the S25 the 10Gb port could be shutdown and if so you might need to configure the switch. The easiest way to do it is to use a serial 9pin to rj45 cable to connect a PC to the switch's serial port. Hope you have one otherwise it can become a challenge.

You could try to make a cable using the pinouts listed in this doc.

    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

It turned out that the 10GB port was shutdoen so i have now opened it and the switch is now connected however i cannot seem to get an Avid Client Manager to connect through the switch (port's 1-24 are all open). The System is set to single switch, 10Gb and has an addresss of 192.168.255.17 (default) which shows 'connected' but when i try and connect a client machine to the fromt of the switch (1Gb ethernet with flashing green lights) with an address in the same range (i.e. 192.168.255.100) it doesnt show up.

I can use the same machine and client software to easily connect via Ethernet Port 1 on ISIS with direct connect so client machine seems ok?

I wonder if i need to do something further with the switch that i'm not aware of?

    Thank you

First to see if the switch is configured properly. Ping the server from one of the edit computers. If you do not get a response, then the switch is likely improperly configured. Check the 10Gb port is active and part of the same VLAN as the 1Gb ports. Make sure the Isis is set to 10Gb mode and not 4x1Gb mode or direct connect.

here's the result of the ping

Pinging 192.168.255.17 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.255.102: Destination host unreachable.

    Request timed out.

    Request timed out.

Do i have to assign ip addresses to ports on the switch or should they just accept any conection.

Ports 1-24 on the front are open (#no shut)

can you advise how to upload the Avid supplied config file for Dell 25S switch?

    Thank you

    going from memory....

    1. You will need the ethernet to serial converter for the S25. You will also need an app the can handle terminal/command line communication (Zterm, Putty, etc.).

    2. Connect the converter to the switch and your computer. Note there is a specific port on the switch to connect it (top right I think).

    Start the app

    Baud rate: 9600

    data bits: 8

    parity: none

    stop bits: 1

    deactivate any flow control

    3. Power the switch. At the first line type "enable" and press enter. The default password is "avid"

    4. Enter "conf" and press enter

    5. Open the Avid switch config file using a text app (Notepad, TextEdit, etc)

    6. Copy and paste every line. Depending on the app you may need to do this one line at a time or you can do the entire file in one shot.

    7. Once it is completed, type "exit" at the end. Press enter.

    8. Type "wr mem" and press enter

    9. Type "reload" and press enter

    10. Confirm by selecting Y for yes.

    11. The switch will reboot.

    12. Test the connection now. If things work then you are done. If not, they you will need to redo the steps again.

    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

    Thanks Dom, this worked perfectly

I used PUTTY to enter the contents of the Dell Force10 default config from the ISIS installer package and just ignored the bits that werent relevant (i.e. ports 25-26 and Stack ID 1) and i can now use any port on the front of the Dell S25 with a 10gb connection to the ISIS Myricom card

I now have 2 working 5500 chassis and i'm ordeing another set of 10Gb connections (SFP+, XFP+ and LC cable) but i need to ask do i need a licence for the 2nd chassis (i dont have one) if i want to use them together as expansion?

    Thank you again

    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

No additional license is needed to convert one of the chassis in to an expansion.  Just delete the storage group, disable the system director and bind to the other system director.

    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

Well that certainly sounds straight forward. I'm guessing i can just add to the Dell25S spare 10GB port using the Myricom Card and it will show up on the other System Director

Ill give it a go whrn my XFP arrives and see how it goes

    thank you

    Re: Isis 5000 Raid

Yes it's pretty straightforward. Make sure the store is unbound and disable the System Director. Assign an IP within the same subnet. The other System Director will detect it. Bind it and complete the process.
correct, just connect the chassis to the same switch as the system director and make sure th le main chassis (system director) and expansion are connected via 10Gb to the switch.

I cannot disseminate to get the 2nd storage manager to appear on the first.

the 2nd system has System Director disabled and storage manager is unbound.

    main unit address is 192.168.255.17

    Expansiin unit address is 192.168.255.19

bothvate connected to different 10gb ports on the Dell 25S

    am I missing something?

    Hi,

Can you ping 192.168.255.19 from the other ISIS?

Have you set the ip in the storage manager network configuration and restarted the expansion chassis? Can you access the storage manager agent on the expansion chassis and inside it is the status ok?

ISIS software version is the same on both chassis?

Can the System Director ping the expansion?
