Hello,
Having some ongoing issues with Avid today so decided to bump up to 2021.12 on my 2018 Mac Mini
3.2 6-Core Intel Core i7 (32G RAM) running Big Sur 11.1. update: Now running Monterey.
Seems now I get several seconds of spinning beachball anytime I go near an effect, a title, or even cut and paste. Did a setting perhaps reset, or could there be something else effecting the system to cause this slow down? Rendering the timeline doesn't seem to help. I'm working with proxy media so I know it's not choking on that.
Anyone running Monterey on a similar spec'ed machine? Never sure if the OS upgrade would make things better or worse.
I'm hoping this might settle itself down but I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts.
Dan
UPDATE #1:
So, I went ahead and upgraded my OS to Monterey and the same thing keeps happeing. Playback is smooth, but anytime I make an edit I get 10 seconds of beachball before it will play smoothly again. Any ideas? Thank you.
UPDATE #2 :
A full end to end render of the sequence seems to have solved the issue temporarily. It still comes back from time to time though. I'm definately having to render a lot more. Going to try to downgrade to 2021.9
Monterrey is supposed to fix many of the issues Catalina and Big Sur users experienced.

Thank you Pat! I'm assuming this is one of the issues that's being reported? So strange that it happened between 21.9.0 and 2021.12. I get nervous upgrading any OS, but it might be worth a shot if I can't fix it.

When you installed Monterey, did you do a clean install? I created a new partition, did a clean install of Monterey 12.1 on it, then installed 2021.12 (not to mention a whack of other demanding software) and no issues.
Thanks Corkey. I did not do a clean install. What happened just a second ago though, was a full end to end render of my sequence. Received some random error messages but this seems to have done the trick. I guess I know what I'll try first next time!
Keeping fingers crossed.
I've just updated to 2021.12 on 11.6.1 and am experiencing tremendous difficulties with beachballing after any action. Doesn't matter what I do, if I perform an action, it beachballs for 30 secs. I rendered entire sequence, and it reduced the amount of time it beachballs, but it is still doing it - now they only last less than 10 secs. But still intensely annoying. 2021.9 did not appear to have this issue, on the same OS.
Sorry to hear rendering didn't fix it. It still hits me from time to time. There's the good old 'recreate user settings from scratch' trick that you might try. I still haven't gotten around to it as a render and OS Monterey got rid of most of my issues. Let us know here if you find another solution. Best of luck.
If I am sick of anything, it is the Avid tech support person's first response being "Have you created a new user?" question. I know it makes sense and helps identify where the problem lies, but as you say, recreating an entire user setup is, like, maybe half a day's work, if you can even remember them all, which I probably can't. If only there was a way to import the settings from one user to another without carrying over any of the cruft the task is trying to clear out.
With tech support, we tested and it seemed the beachballing problem was project-specific (no beachballing in a new project with a simple sequence), and the advice was to delete any old bins that might contain cruft from when the project began, with another editor, on 2018.x. That initially seemed to work, but within a few minutes I'm back at about 5 seconds of beachball after every single operation - edit, lift, segment move, rippple delete, open a clip, etc. It's enoroumsly frustrating, and I cannot isolate the problem. All suggestions welcome - I can't see much point opening a new, different support case on this, as I'll just get the same reply. (And yes, it happens with a new user as well).
Thanks for the update. My render solution is imperfect at best. I'm starting an entirely new project in a week so we'll see if the problem crops up again. If it does, I'll open a ticket and let you know if I learn anything new.
Update: I uninstalled 2021.12, reinstalled 2021.9, and the beachball issue is completely gone. For me, it seems the issue is specifically to do with 2021.12.
Thank you for reporting back. I'm also experiencing beachballing as you described. Still on Mojave for the time being. Hate to lose my Mbox Pro by upgrading. :(

Though 2021.9 on 11.6.1 was working very well, I updated to 12.1 and then reinstalled 2021.12. More fool me - I'm right back to square one - beachballing after every operation, and a significant delay in keyboard input, meaning marking on the fly is almost a second late.
It seems there's something wrong with 2021.12....for me, anyway. These are all new problems I hadn't experienced before. Maybe I'll go back to my pre-update backup....
im seeing this in 2021.12 as well on Monterey.
Another update: after a mutli-hour remote session with tech support, they agreed something is up. 2021.12 just doesn't work on my system without endless beachballing, but I've reverted to 2021.9 on macOS 12.1 and that works just fine. Contemplating testing 12.2 so I can use Safari again....
