Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

    Hello Ken,

I'm not sure either, but from a logically point of view I don't think this will be possible as Boris RED aka Avid FX is an application and Continuum are effect filters. And I am pretty sure that you cannot open your old projects in Title Studio either.

Maybe you can do a small test and let us all know. Wink

I am also curious what the product specialists on the Boris Forum are going to say. Hopefully they will have a solution for you.

    Cheers and keep us posted!

Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

    Hi Ivan,

Thanks for getting back to me!

Yeah, things don't line up logically for BCC to be able to recognize RED, but ya never know what they had up their sleeve when creating BCC.  I haven't heard back from Boris FX, so I'll see what they have to say before I conduct any tests.

Either way, I'll let you know what I find out.  Thanks again!

I'm running the current version of MCC and the Boris Red filter is working correctly. The current version I'm running is Boris Red 5.6, which is the 64-bit version.

Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

    Hi Dave,

Thank you for responding to my post!

Since posting my question, I managed to find someone with an unused copy of Boris RED 5.6, installed it, and was delighted to see that MC 2021.12 recognized it!

When I started my quest for a late version of RED (which NONE of the vendors was selling), I had feared that the Avid programmers might have deleted from the later versions of MC the code which interfaces with RED, but was reassured when I saw RED in the filters list.  What a relief!

Like you, I find that RED works correctly with MC 2021.12.  However, if I drag the RED RT filter icon from the Effects Pallet to the timeline too quickly, MC immediately crashes.  Or if I drag the RED RT filter icon to the timeline slowly to prevent a crash, but then too quickly click the RED User Interface button in the Effects Editor, MC crashes.  However, if I take my time with both of those actions, MC stays up.

The crashing suggests to me that it's taking my system more time to process those actions than I'm giving it (which is surprising, since I have a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 8-Core processor), and MC doesn't know what to do with the delay, so just crashes.  My solution has been just to be patient and give my system time to process my actions.

Have you experienced any crashing like that when using RED filters?  Thanks!

    ripvanmarlowe:
Their bundles are also good value - if you're looking at prices around 700-900 bucks then the Continuum Complete + Mocha Pro bundle is currently $897 (down from $1795). This will get you all the BCC plugins, Primatte studio, Title Studio, Particle Illusion and a full copy of Mocha Pro which absolutely destroys the Avid tracker. IMO this is a great deal and that's for the permanent license NOT for a yearly subscription.

I'm kicking myself now I missed that offer Andi. I use it at work all the time - BCC is almost indespensible in post and is ubiquitous everywhere in facilities. I agree Mocha is fantastic and essential too (Corner pin Studio and Witness protection get a battering from me every week) when Avid's tracker is next to useless. Never used Title Studio but with Titler+ on life support it maybe our only hope too.

Mocha in Witness Protection is so great. Worked on a show recently where they had almost no clearance and decided to film at a country fair with about a million children running around all over the place. It would have taken me days to keyframe blurs over all their faces, but tracking multiple shapes all at the same time is a total gamechanger. Smashed through everything in no time and covered myself in glory. That's exactly what you want, tools that make you look good!

I've learnt to time all my new purchases and subscriptions around Novemeber for black friday as all the American companies often do huge discounts around then. Boris is very generous with that and the exchange rate helps a lot too. Maybe do a yearly or monthly sub and then grab a permanent license later in the year?

Actually I haven't. I will play around with all of the RED filters and see what happens. My current system is running an i7-4790, 4-core/8 threads @ 4Ghz. Not the latest and greatest, but it does the job.

Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

Thanks for the reply, Dave! It supports my suspicion that my system just wasn't keeping up with me.

If you conduct any tests, the test protocol would be to drag the RED RT filter very quickly to the segment in the timeline, then immediately click the "Launch User Interface" button in the Effects Editor. When I take my time in dragging and clicking, MC doesn't crash.

In any event, if you ever do experience a crash in this way, the remedy is simply to "slow down and enjoy the view." Hopefully, though, you'll never have to deal with this problem.

Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

    Hi Andi,

I've yet to get into the Mocha tutorials (got a pressing job on my plate right now), but it sounds like a real effort-saver, and I look forward to having the time to do that.

Your practice of timing your new purchases & subscriptions for black Friday sounds prudent, and I appreciate your mentioning it. I'm going to make that a policy of my own!

    Hello Ken,

Last evening I took some time to replicate the problem you are facing with Boris RED.

Unfortunately I was not able to let the Avid crash with any of the Boris RED filters. Not in a very fast nor in a slow way like you describe. Everything performed like it should on my system.

The version of Media Composer that I am using is 2021.12.55552 and Boris RED 6.5.0.296.

    Friendly greetings,

    Ivan

Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

    Hi Ivan,

Thanks for conducting the test, and for the feedback!

I guess the problem is unique to my system, but fortunately not unmanageable, given that I can avoid the problem simply by giving my system a few seconds to "catch up."

    Thanks again!

    Hey Dave,

Thanks for conducting the test, and for the feedback!

As you probably saw in my reply to Ivan, the problem is likely unique to my system, but not unmanageable, since I can avoid it just by giving my system time to catch up. It's a simple and easy workaround, so I'm not complaining.

    Thanks again!

Re: Replacement for Avid FX/Boris RED?

    Hi Ken,

I had the same crashing issues with Boris RED last year, but I didn't have a workaround. I reached out to support, and Boris was able to provide a v5.6.3 (unsupported) that was built for legacy projects. It has been working smoothly ever since, all the way through the latest MC versions. Give them a shout!
