    Used space vs. used space

    Hi,

I just pulled a snapshot report on our Nexis.

If I sum up all the used space in all workspaces = 286TB

Looking at the Storage Groups console page, used = 365TB

Please explain the discrepancy. Does the workspace calculation not take into account actual space usage as per the 4MB blocks, whereas the Storage Groups numbers do?

Re: Used space vs. used space

Just to explain how file size works on NEXIS.

With a Scale Out storage group the smallest block is 512KB and 1024KB with High Performance Storage Group.
With a scale out storage group if the file is 512KB or less it will use 512KB on the disk.
Then the protection is added to this. As a rule, 2 Disk Protection on disk is best case is 20% for parity on all large files. For files, less than 512KB size it can be as much as 66%.

Re: Used space vs. used space

    Hi Bob,

Thank you, I'm aware of all that, but it doesn't address my question?

As said, Nexis is reporting 2 different sizes - the question is about the discrepency between those 2 Nexis' own reports.

I did happen to run across a post of yours from 2015: "The difference you’re seeing is the available space from small files that don’t use an entire chunk being added as available, when in fact they aren’t available to store files." This was about ISIS, SNMP and ASM.... but maybe it's the same answer to this. Maybe not, hence me asking. :)

Workspace used space column does not account for parity usage and block waste.
