    Big Sur or Catalina?

    Hi,

I have a quantity of new iMacs coming into our facility and I was wondering if people were finding Big Sur more stable than Catalina for Media Composer. Our facility up until now has been Mojave which has been fine and I resisted going to Catalina. The new machines will arrive with Big Sur but my Pro Tools colleague is keen to get them rolled back to Catalina.

Does anyone have firmly held opinions over which OS is more stable with MC? Has Big Sur made a better job of sorting out some of the issues that arrived with the arrival of Catalina or did Catalina finally make a good working OS with MC before Big Sur arrived.

    Thanks

Its worth noting that the longer an OS has been in circulation the more likely Avid will support it (the most current OS update is often not supported immediatley) and the more time they have to resolve issues.

Check the documentation for the Avid version you plan to rollout and ensure you are using an OS version supported.

I've found the reliability/stability of MC on Big Sur to be better than Catalina generally.

But Mojave is still to be preferred if you want the most flexibility of codec support and import options, not to mention title tools/

    Thanks Mikey,

Good to know that you find Big Sur more stable. I'd love to keep everything on Mojave, where I feel happiest, but with half the facility moving to either Big Sur or Catalina, I feel for compatibility with students moving around the building everything will have to move up.

I may keep a couple back for security.

I've heard of issues with ProTools stability under Big Sur so that maybe a consideration.

    Re: Big Sur or Catalina?

    Hi Pat,

Yeah, that's why my audio colleague is more keen on Catalina than Big Sur but I'm thinking that Big Sur may be the better option with MC. I heard today that they're probably arriving with OS 11.3 in 4 to 6 weeks, hope MC (2021.6), is up to 11.3 by then.
