    Avid NEXIS 2020.7.6???

So today Avid Nexis 2020.7.6 is released with the following fixes listed in the readme:

    http://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/AvidNEXIS/AvidNEXIS_ReadMe_v2020.7.6.pdf

    • [SSENG-28389] Fixed an issue for systems using Avid NEXIS Mirror protected workspaces. If a write to the primary location experiences a potential Delayed Write Failure (DWF) after 14 seconds, the non-primary mirror will create the quorum consensus copy (3rd location) to ensure the write is successful to two mirror locations. In systems without Media Mirroring, Delayed Write Failures (DWFs) can still occur.

    • [SSENG-28669] Fixed an issue caused by a slow disk read during a Read/Modify/Write operation resulting in unreadable media.

These fixes also exist in the latest release of the 2021.3 version where these same fixes are listed in the readme

    under:

    Server Fixes

    • [SSENG-28389] Fixed an issue for systems...etc

    • [SSENG-28669] Fixed an issue caused by a slow disk read.... etc

If the Nexis core (server) is backwards compatible with older clients, why is a 2020.7.6 release needed if the fixes are only core related?

    Jeroen

According to Ed the product manager....

We did the 2020.7.6 patch after 2021.3.0 to back port the most critical fixes for a couple of customers that were reticent to go to 2021.3 (2021.3 has additional features and other changes).   Overall we still recommend 2021.3.x  (and this back patch will not be a typical thing going forward)

    Re: Avid NEXIS 2020.7.6???

    Thanks Marianna,

Maybe what I'm about to write may sound trivial, or even trying to find a problem where there isn't one, but I will try to explain why I think it matters.

I have a Nexis E4 upgrade scheduled for tomorrow at one of our customers and just spoke with the tech in charge. He has just updated Nexis client to 2020.7.5 on most editing clients and servers. (No clusters, some VM's). This customer also has an Isis 5500 that might soon be removed from the Interplay setup but for now it is still present.

With the knowledge of Nexis core <-> older client compatibility, the choices that now present itself for which the readme does not provide any info are:

To which core version to update? Why is there a 2020.7.6 core if the 2021.3.1 (yes another new release from 3 days ago) core is compatible with all 2018.x, 2019.x, 2020.x, 2021.3.x clients? This recitense to install 2021.3 by some customers must have a functional reason or not? I assume Avid doesn't create a new bundle (inc core) if there wasn't a technical reason. A 2020.7.6 client only release would have made sense for Isis.

To which client to update? Because of the Isis, the answer is simple 2020.7.6. But as no client fixes are mentioned in the 2020.7.6 readme, is it identical to the 2020.7.5 client (and the older 2020.7.4)? In the 2021.3.0 (and 2021.3.1) readme a client fix was listed.

[SSENG-28437] Fixed an issue where copying a file that included a double-byte character caused the Avid NEXIS Client to become unresponsive.

But that one is not listed in the 2020.7.6 release. If the .4 .5 and .6 client are identical the existence of a 2020.7.6 core is even weirder.

At the moment with the current information available my only 'logical' choice is to update to 2020.7.6 as downgrading is simply not supported. But the information needed (as far as my brain is able to determine) to make that choice not being present in the readme's creates a worrying amount of uncertainty.
