Has anyone tested the new MC 2021.2 on M1 machines?

    Hello everyone,

As per title. On the doc https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Compatibility/macOS-Big-Sur-Support there's no mention to the new MC version, so does anyone know if this version works on M1 machines or it open through Rosetta?

To the best of my knowledge, no support for M1's yet.

Really?  I heard that there was no way to run it on an M1.  Can you elaborate on your process getting it running?

    Thanks, JIM.

I'm currently running MC 2021.3 in First but I see ny reason why it wouldn't work on Standard or Ultimate. I just installed it like you normally would

Re: Has anyone tested the new MC 2021.2 on M1 machines?

There have been posts related to trying to run MC on an M1 machine and the launch error it produces and some have then dug out the file triggering that and deleted it to then allow it to launch. What impact that will have on stability and the functions of MC is completely unknown. And not a route I'd take if I need to earn money on that system.

So if you fiddle you can get it to launch but why bother. Until there is a supported version you are just playing.

I had a student on a recent '101' course using an M1-based system.  Her system crashed quite a bit!

I understand everything. The only thing I say is almost a year has now passed since the announcement of the M1 chip and Avid is not that it does not have a native version, whatever, but not even a version that goes in emulation with Rosetta. It just feels absurd to me. It is not a controversy, just bewilderment

any one else remeber the days *before* apple computers were based on intel chips?

Lots of lag on PC updates and bug fixes filtering down to Mac machines.

Announcing a new chipm doesn't allow developer to start coding for it. Too many surprises in the past for folks to risk that. Apple have a habit of makingb key changes just before releasing.

November 2020 was the release of these new systems so thats 6 months ago.

With the M1 limited to 16GB and 16GB being the minimum spec for MC its not even clear if it makes any sense to port Media Composer over to a platform thats at its max the minimum spec.

I can't know for sure but I imagine Avid are on the case but with Covid and everything else things take time.

Thanks for your considered post, Pat.  I appreciate the perspective.

I imagine that it will be totally worth it for MC to be ported over, as the M1 is merely the first chip out of the gate.  There will be more powerful chipsets coming (perhaps soon?).

As someone who has dipped his toes into the M1 mini universe, I can say that the machine is quite impressive for it's small footprint/cost.  Not exactly a 'pro' machine, but runs After Effects, Resolve, Logic Pro quite speedily!  (I have the 16GB RAM machine)

I would make it my daily driver, as soon as there's MC to run on it.

    Cheers, JIM
