Disable enter FX MODE on lasso

I recently switched to the 2020.8 version after finishing a year-long project on MC 2018.

In prior versions I would use the lasso tool to select the edge of clip to automatically enter trim mode on that specific clip (without having to select the appropriates tracks and pressing the trim mode button).

But now, in the new version, if there is a dissolve/fade (audio or video) on that clip, it automatically enters the Effect editing mode and/or transition manipulation tool. Is there any way to make it behave like it used to?

You have the Timeline setting 'Applying effects opens the Effects Editor' selected. Switching this off solves the problem.

Hi MikeyB. Thanks for your help.

Sadly, this is not working. This option was already off. As you can see in the video below, lassoing a regular cut gets me in trim mode, but if there is a fade it opens up the effect editor.

Hmm. Mine definitely doesn't do that!

In that case, try creating a new User Settings, just in case yours has got 'stuck'.

Alternatively, update to 2020.12. Although I don't recall seeing this in a change list, maybe it got 'fixed' somewhere between your version and mine.

Re: Disable enter FX MODE on lasso

So, I found the problem. It was coming from my “panel set up”. It seems like having the Effect Editor at hand in the interface causes this. I rearranged my windows, saved it under a new workspace and now the problem is fixed.

Thank you for posting the solution - I forgot that I had recently window'd/tabbed my effect editor, thinking that'd be a good idea. Nope! That lasso>to>effect mode was driving me nuts!

I'm also seeing that new behaviour, that lassoing a clip / edit / audio keyframe always brings you in the effect editor when that is opened. I now have to close it all the time and in the past it was always opened in a tab and worked fine. This should be a bug and it needs to be fixed.

Re: Disable enter FX MODE on lasso

I have found the same issue, but changing the workspace doesn't fix it permanently for me.

In v2018 when you enter effect mode the effect panel opens and when you closed effect mode (by hitting "Y"-source/record or escape-key, possibly other ways) the effect panel closes and you're back to normal editing mode.

In v2023 sometimes it works that way, but at some point the effect panel stops closing when exiting effect mode.  Then the only way to get back to normal editing is to use the mouse to close the effect panel.

I have complained about this issue in various ways over the year.   Many years ago the "source/record" button (Y-key as default) definitively exited all other modes and tools and sent the user back to true source/record mode -- no segment mode, no transition mode, no effect mode, just in and out points and your playhead.

Over the years I have noticed other issues users have with things like the segment tool, transition tool, and other "modes".  The answer used to be "just press the Y key to reset back to source/record".

AVID, please give us back a way press one key and return to true source/record mode!  It will save us time and you!
