I wish Avid would bring back the original Title Tool. It's SIMPLE. It WORKS. It's RELIABLE.
...and it's physically impossible to do so.
Recreating it was not ever on the table because there was software code within it that was going away from the Mac-based computing world.
The fixes are coming. I know patience is thin, but they are coming.

Patience is not the point. It doesn't matter if a fix is coming when you have to send someone a piece with a title today, and you can't create and manipulate a lower third with two lines of text to be how you want it to be with a basic box around it that is not completely opaque and has a frame around it. How can a company like avid sell a program with a tool that just doesn't work?
I made a box and put some titling in it. I made a second line on a separate track and put that in the box, because I wasn't able to move the separate lines with separate sizes where I wanted them to go. They are inside the box. I am now unabe to access the box. The program is not responding when I click on things inside the title window. It is changing what I'm doing in unexpected ways (size and shape of titling). I want to be able to change things around and explore possibilities to find what I want the lower third to look like. It makes no sense to me that this isn't an incredibly easy process. Marquee worked fine. Where did it go? Couldn't they make a version of it to work with the media composer after 2018. I would go back to 2018 in a heartbeat if I hadn't updated my operating system to Catalina.
The titles I'm making should have taken me 5 minutes. I'm now looking at over two hours and still I can't get it to work for me. It took me 5 days with avid support last time I needed to use titler plus to do something else that should have take me a half hour. It is impossible to work like this.
I was finally able to do what I needed to do, but in the end I didn't do anything different from what I thought I should be doing at the beginning of the process.. I closed and opened the program a few times, saving everything that worked and needing to go use command z many times when the program seemed to have a mind of its own and took off, changing size and placement of lettering when I hadn't done anything to tell it to do what it was doing. Basically, worked the way it seemed they should work, and then didn't, repeatedly, until they worked enough that the combination of all the different successful moments added up to something I can use. This is insane.
kokopelli could you list your system's specs, including macOS version and Media Composer version?
The issues you are describing are not being experienced by others, and so I want to triage what might be wrong with either your sysyem or your workflow. Email me directly at [email protected] if you don't want to do it here... but please reference this thread when you do so. I get 200-500 emails per day and need context.
Most people here place their system specs in their profile. Click on your name, and then click Edit my Profile.

Sorry, no real valuable input here, I am merely logging into every forum I can find to comment on what a despicable mess the Avid Title+ tool is. It's disgraceful. How they had the nerve to add the "+"...additional garbage? I've loved Avid for over a decade, but it is time they loaded up Premiere Pro and copied some of it's core interface.

As Greek TV is 90% on PC and only doing HD, the title tool issue does not affect us that much, but dynamic relink, nexis client, media indexer... the whole media offline catastrophy, all the more.
My 0,02$... Avid needs to let QC have the final say on when a product is ready for release, not a product manager or finance/commercial department. And when for example a new release of Nexis or Nexis client is ready for testing... only after all the other products developers, Media composer, Mediacentral production, Cloud UX, Airspeed, Fastserve, MAM, etc... all give the green light does a product get out of a beta stage.
Creating the perception that 'we' are part of an unvoluntary beta testing program is much easier than undoing it and restoring faith through producing a new version that is 99,99% ready.

This is THE WORST part of MC by a long shot. Adding text should be intuitive. It's as if they wanted to reinvent the wheel here. Titler + is completely useless for anything - I shouldn't have to 'learn' it - I use PP, Photoshop, Word, Text Edit, Notes... none of the intuitive taxt manipulation common to ALL these apps is present in this dog's breakfast 'tool'. I think we know who the tools are here, & it vertainly isn't Titler +.
Complete fail.
Throw it away & get someone who knows what they are doing to rewrite it.
In the meantime, revert to the old title tool - while it was hokey AF, it worked.
Now moving the project I am on into PP.
My view is:
Avid lost sight of what most users required from the Title tool.
We'd had Marquee and then New Blue as alternatives in the past but most core users stuck with title tool.
Because it was intuitive and easy to use, and fast, and produced Title master clips that coukd be re used with ease.
The alternative titling options competed with After Effects and the fact was after effects was established and offered compatibility over the years.
When the old title tool was dropped Avid didn't seem to have realised that past and decided to have another go at making the all singing title tool.
But the User Experience UX just doesn't work. I've not come across anyone who can understand it at first exposure.
Add in over 3 years of tweaks that make compatibility a complete coin toss and users can't afford to risk using it.
The bugs and slow render times are just the final nail.
I imagine many users will never go back to trying it even if the bugs and performance issues can be resolved.
The only option I see is to re create the classic title tool in new code. The developers already have the interface design and the functional requirements. They just need to write the code to work as the old title tool did.
That must be easier than digging a deeper Titler + hole.

This is the stopgap that should have happened a few years ago. We keep getting told that it is literally impossible to recreate legacy titler in 64bit but that cannot be true. Maybe it's not possible to recreate THAT EXACT VERSION in 64bit but is it impossible for someone to clone it's design and functionality? Of course not! I can't think of a more basic tool within MC. Way to listen to your customers Avid, it's only been 4 years. It's called the sunk-cost fallacy, here's the definition:
"the phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial."

Hi,
I have counted all the Avid licenses that the Company which I work for has, 44. Not many. Most of the Avids are in Mojave because of the Title Application.
Unfortunately, we had to migrate to Catalina some of the Macs and soon, we will have to migrate all of them and if the Title+ is not improve, the 44 Avids that we have will be PPs. I am trying to help with the Subcap workaround but it is not enough.
And I think that many companies are struggling with this issue exactly as we are, so if Avid doesn't open the eyes, will lose many clients

Just figured I'd jump in here.
Dear Avid - I'm not sure if you're aware, but all those shows you see on Netflix, Discovery, Amazon, Disney, Universal, THE BIG SCREEN, are mostly being cut on AVID. Yes, your product. And WE THE EDITORS OF THE WORLD, use it as the industry standard. It's better than Premiere, and I won't even mention the others. SO WHY am I contemplating cutting my piece, importing it into Premiere, and doing my titling there?
I know you're reading this post.
I know you care!!
Can you guys PLEASE come up with a solution.
WE ARE TRYING OUR BEST TO ENTERTAIN AND INFORM THE PLANET RIGHT NOW AND NEED OUR TOOL RESTORED TO FUNCTIONALITY!
Thank you :).
Hi there
I have come up with a lengthy but workable workaround the awful Titler+ as I too had this same issue. All I was trying to do was create a simple animated title that enlarged over time. But Titler+ makes this impossible to achieve.
My steps for this are below and basically mean using the Titler+ to create a Matte of your desired caption which you can then animate using the Matte Key effect. This way it keeps your titles editable inside Avid and avoids any round tripping to Adobe Photoshop or similar...
The steps are:
1. Create a titler+ title on top of the video as normal. Lay this out as required.
2. Switch the Background on and set it to Black.
3. Make the fill colour for the title white.
4. Move the titler+ clip up one video track.
5. On the layer below the titler+ clip create a Mask effect and close this down to fill the screen. Make this the colour you want the fill for your title to be. (You can also achieve interesting video fill effects of course).
6. Hold down Alt/Option and drag Matte Key effect onto the titler+ title clip.
7. Set the matte key effect to key through the titler+ and fill with the mask layer on top of your video.
8. You can then move the matte key and keyframe it just like you could with the legacy title tool. And it won't affect the layers below such as your background video.
Long time lurker. Infrequent poster. Win 10 box runing 2021.12. Titler+ is a fail. I am unable to select an object (rectangular box) that I have drawn. Colour picker opens but I can't change or save the colour. No colour wheel to pick from either as shown in Avid's YouTube videos. Utterly useless.
