Basic basic music only mix but need that Loudness compliance thing to pass for broadcast. Whats the best way to ensure it complies from within Avid guys? I have some audio plugins available from Avid called Pro Limiter/Pro compressor (seems to need a $50 posted iLok device though, so that ended really well . Bit behind the times as am still using lovely olde worlde PPM's it seems
Proper stuff goes through a pro audio post facility but this is just a music bed :)
Thanks

Nothing as default in MC (premiere has an R128 Loudness rader that is realtime)
Most folks use something like Nugen plugin but thats like £400
Be cheaper to use a Premiere subscription ironically.

A very simple plugin for this is LevelNorm: https://beatrig.com/product/levelnorm/
Just do your mix, do a mixdown, run LevelNorm on the mixdown and it will make your mix compliant.
On the other hand, Avid Pro Limiter also gives you a LUfs readout, and is a very nice brickwall limiter.
There are a few free or low cost options if you are happy to export mixed down audio. But thats cluncky if you need to be making adjustments.
The Avid Pro Limiter is a good solution but its not cheap. If you need to make loudness adjustments then its worth the cost.
Thanks guys - really appreciated.
I have that Avid Pro Limiter and a serial - was a support renewal freebie in December :) I think I need a physical iLOK dongle to make it work though? This has to be bought and posted to me - it doesnt work using my existing Avid dongle so will miss my TX deadline. Does anyone know if that is right please? Here's the iLOK: http://www.sonic8.com/uki/index.php/ilok.html
Cheers

I beg to differ. If you make any adjustments, you'll need to remeasure the whole thing anyway. LevelNorm etc. are faster than realtime.
I'm afraid that yes, you will need an iLok. Are they no music stores nearby that have them in stock?
Is there any way you can send over your mix to someone to run a plugin on it to make it compliant?
Cheers Job - mates at the dubbing house will run it through for me as I google 'local music shops'! Thanks
Great. In the meantime, I would order the iLok. Much fun to be had with the Avid Pro Limiter, or any other audio plugins (most of them use iLoks for licensing).
PPMulator will give various options for monitoring loudness (in addition to PPMs) as a master bus plugin. MC limitation of only showing one plugin interface at a time makes it less useful than it might be.
Bute loudness tool does a similar thing with history across a whole show. Never had much success with it in MC though.
I generally mix (tight turnaround, no seperate audio mix) using Avid internal meters with ‘reference level’ in audio tool set to -12dB (= PPM 5.5) and keep the meters just touching the yellow, with a master bus compressor gently compressing (3:1 @-14 ish with knee) peaks above that and a second one brickwalling (100:1 @-5ish fast attack & release, small knee). If time I run the whole thing through videotoolshed loudness change app (Orban have a free equivalent) and trim levels if necessary. Usually it’s within 1dB.
If you heavily compress then you’ll need to bring the ref level you mix to -14 (PPM5), if you have wide dynamics then you can probably aim for -10(PPM6) to hit -23LU.
Beware that, if you create tone media, you then need to adjust level there to -18 as it will take ref level as default.
Thanks Trevor - I always like to think I have a good ear for finishing a few tracks of audio and those tips are very useful.
Pro Limiter activates with a cloud iLok so I didnt buy a dongle. It never seem to fire up the integrated loudness LUFS meter though - the whole point - it only shows instantaneous :(. It also cant batch priocess and normalize the track to -23dB LUFS either - so really I'm finding it absolutely useless.
I found a Nugen plugin that will do this Normalisation but its pushing £400 which is a bit much for ONE normalisation plugin. Think I have found an alternative though :)
You could try iZotop's Insite, its $199 I don't know if it will conform a mix to a given LUFS but is is a reasonable measurement tool and no dongle required.

I use the iZotope RX for automatic dialogue denoising.

I don't.
I use both Compressor and Limiter using iLok cloud.
You can register your email as the electronic iLok.

You are of course right, I had forgotten about iLok Cloud. You'll need to be online for that to work, though.
