looks good - i like the tabbed interface ala premiere, and he flatter appearance. Looks the same but different and modern and the new bin navigation thingy looks intereting.

Sure do - been a user since 1996 and have rolled with all the punches..The look has been outdated for a while now and the tabs are a welcome funtionality. I hate working on MACS and having interface gaps as iti s now.. obviusly purely cosmeti but it bugs me. On PC at least you have the background thing so you dont see any desktop. 

 

I was always took the GUI resistance as people who never took the time to learn the KB shortcuts and are pushing interface buttons all day which is fine if thats how you work - but If you use a KB the interface makes zero difference to actual editing.

Interesting days ahead!

Hopefully we'll have native transfer modes built into Media Composer, as well as faster AAF EXPORT. Let's hope it's not just a new interface but huge changes to the way the software works. It's looking very Adobe Premiere from the preview with the new Media Composer.

I was thinking maybe the Resolve 16 was going to be that Blackmagic had acquired Avid/Media Composer. It'll be intesting to see how Media Composer progresses.

I ahve a feeling its largely a re - skin of the software that they can further build on - I dont xpect anything else to change for now. 

Seems to be way more than just a re-skin. Many fundamental changes to the engine and of course the look. This is a significant overhaul even if some of the changes are under the hood or are geared towards those working in larger teams.. They have training class going on at Avid Connect in Vegas. Certainly feels faster to me (even multi-cam responds faster). Didn't try exports but the new look and the various edit, audio, color views make it feel faster since you don't have to mess with resizing windows or moving bins. Much more modern looking and more responsive. Smart tool was moved or something was different but didn't spend anytime seeing what changed. My impression was that the things that I'm used to are there but multiple things that will improve my "experience" while editing are now available and are a welcome addition.

I imagine a time when more hyperthreading will be used in Media Composer.

Where timewarped clips can be in a multicam group.

When we can export web videos from media composer with gpu acceleration (nvenc)

When upresing/relinking improves drastically.

When editing navtive codec videos is improved.

When anchoring of timewarps on non native fps clips is improved.

1 more axis of rotation on source settings.

When rebuilding database is done in the background. When Media Composer space calculations with dnxhq is improved or disabled. When resize can go above 400%. Rendering of multiple clips on timeline simentaneously. When avid pan and zoom stops sucking. and the list goes on... UI wasnt really on there.

In the video Chris Bové posted on the Avid Editors of Facebook, it looked like they've integrated the Smart Tool into the toolbar above the timeline to give us back all the space it was eating up on the far left side.

Not for you (or me, particularly, but I don't care that much what they work on in what order), but there have been a lot of people crying for years about the dated interface and how much it pains them and hurts in the great competition for the young people who all think Avid is for dinosaurs. They should be pleased.

Literally every desicion we make in life is about priortizing things.

When we decide to go to the grocery store, working a few more hours or continuing the next day, running errands or working, etc.

But you don't care in the order.  Got it.

As someone who using Media Composer every day and is aware of the limitations under the hood, I am hoping they will be resolved soon.

I phrased that badly. What I meant was there are a lot of posts from users about features they need in their workflows, and not all of them are the same. I don't think that the features I'D like to see are SO VERY IMPORTANT that they must be implemented RIGHT NOW, BEFORE ANY OTHERS, WHICH ARE LESS IMPORTANT THAN MINE.

And then, Avid, take a look at other people's lists, and the results of the ACA vote on feature requests, and make some progress, which is what it looks to me - someone who uses Avid every day - like the upcoming update does.

I agree and like to add the choice of a brighter interface color.

But if a modern GUI is essential for Avid to survive at the market, I can take that, too.
