Error Initialising bin Indexer Unable to set root path: /

I have recently updated MC (after uninstalling everything and restarting), then installed new version and every project I open has this error message: Error Initialising bin Indexer Unable to set root path: /

Is this a drive permissions issue? It doesn't affect my other computer at all (running the same version of the software).

Running El Capitan and was on 8.5, but tried installing 2018.9 and 8.9 and both have same message, so it seems as though it's the Mac blocking something rather than MC?

    Any suggestions welcome!

Did you install MC under and are you ruunning it under an administrator account?

Where do your Avid projects live?

    Hi Kevin,

Yes, it was installed (and runs) under an administrator account.

The Avid projects are in Shared Projects within the Shared Users folder.

My previous version of MC had none of these issues, but in updating to 2018.9, I had to reinstall the licence and wonder if something like that could contribute?

Maybe...I'm wondering if you should try uninstalling / reinstalling once to see if that fixes it.

Was there a fix for this in the end? I have the same issue with a machine.

Hi Phil, the issue in the end for me was a conflict between Mac OS and permissions. I wasn't able to fix this without wiping the drive and reinstalling Mac OS clean, then installing Avid. This solved the problem...

Simple fix, but try deleting your bay folder in the project.

    Worked for me!

Not a stupid question! Stick out tongue

The 'bay folder' contains settings for each computer connected to the Nexis. Right now I'm on iMac4 so there is an 'iMac4' folder in my Bin Container/Project window.

This is indeed a permissions issue, and one that can still happen now, 5 years later. (Hence keeping the thread.)

As Apple keeps increasing their OS's security, there are actually more opportunities to run into this.

In my case, the cause was working on the Nexis, and someone didn't "Allow" the dialogue window to approve Media Composer to access network volumes. It was unchecked in System Preferences > Security > Privacy > File Access. Checking that box fixed it... no need to wipe the computer.

Fwiw, I've had this nagging issue and finally got around to fixng it simply by allowing AvidBinIndexer to access data in the Security & Privacy section in preferences on the Mac. :)
