    NVIDIA Quadro / Z420 Questions

In my HP Z420 [E5-1650v2], I want to replace my old NVIDIA Quadro 2000D card.

If I want to stick with a Quadro card and stay in my price range, I see two options:
    - NVIDIA Quadro M2000
    - NVIDIA Quadro P2000

(They cost roughly the same. And of course I would prefer the newer and more powerful P2000.)

    Now I have these questions:

    1. Is the P2000 compatible with the Z420?
    2. Do I have to buy the HP branded version of the P2000 card - or is it ok to buy the PNY NVIDIA Quadro P2000?

Any other suggestions regarding a new graphics card are very appreciated, too.

    TIA

I am using a P2000  with Windows 10 - using asus prime MB (Z270) & I7 -  without any problems.  I used the the specified driver in 8.9.1 for the video card.

I'm pretty sure the P2000 would be fine with the Z420, as I've never heard of any modern Quadro card not being compatible with HP products, and I'm sure they would never force you to buy HP branded versions over a PNY version.

Whatever card you decide on, I would recommend you get the version that expells the cooling air out of the back of the card (as in the 'founders'edition cards) rather than blowing hot air inside the workstation.

With all the new cards that are coming out, it's hard for Avid to keep an up-to-date list of compatible cards, but many of us have found that with the latest versions of MC, most modern cards work fine.

Unless things have changed recently, Avid have never really fully utilised the power of modern cards, and it's things like Boris and Sapphire plugins that seem to benefit most from lots GPU muscle. If you're also going to be running other software that loves lots of GPU power (like Davinci Resolve) then it's sensible to go for the best you can afford.

If you go to the following link....

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/avid-media-composer.html

... it would seem to suggest that as far as Nvidia are concerned, the P2000 should be fine with MC

Re: NVIDIA Quadro / Z420 Questions

Thank you so much for your input - this is very helpful for me!:)

I did some further investigations which confirm that (1) the P2000 fits well into the Z420, and (2) the PNY is fine, too.

@Marianna - so the NVIDIA Quadro 2000D (which is not on the list) is no longer recommended/working with Avid? Did I get this right?

Because... I never had such a sloppy Avid installation... The same system worked ok with MC 7x versions.

It would be great if my old Quadro 2000D is the only culprit!

I only found P2000 cards with the fan on the bottom of the card.

Re: NVIDIA Quadro / Z420 Questions

I bought a PNY P2000 to replace my old PNY 2000D which is still working on 8.9.2 by 353.82 driver (any problem isnt Avid's but Nvidia EOL them).

However it seems that this P2000 card was faulty and I sent it back after try it to my (old) PC (and at other newer two at a computer store) as it never gave any signal (of life). Waiting for a replacement.

First time I see a card not working. Anyways I think if the card is ok you will never have any problem with it as I have never had (till today) any issue with my old (too) 2000D.

    Just my two euros.

Yes, I can see this. It was only a recommendation when using some of the heavyweight cards which throw out around 300 watts of heat, and can really raise the temperatures inside your workstation.

The P2000 specs say it only consumes 75 watts which isn't going to be such a problem.

If I put a P5000/6000 into my Lenovo P900 along with my existing M4000 and have the M4000 running the displays so the P6000 would be fully dedicated to graphics processing, would that get along with MC?

nope, MC only uses the display gpu.

    sapphire might.

multi gpu not worth it unless: big resolve setup.

What I meant was, will MC freak out? It used to be very sensitive to hardware config.

Re: NVIDIA Quadro / Z420 Questions

Over the years, I have used low-end Quadro cards (meeting MC's minimum requirements) and have upgraded to expensive Quadro cards.  I've never noticed any increased performace with the more expensive Quadro cards when running MC.   But, as the others have said, I do see a difference running other programs.
