Hi, Guys.
I am assisting on a film and have being asked to do the transcoding in Resolve, which is a new workflow for me. In doing some tests with 2K (and higher) test footage on Arri's site, I've run into some problems. Here are my steps:
1. I bring the ProRes 4444 (XQ) Arri footage into Resolve, put on a LUT and timecode burn-ins, and transcode to 1920x1080 MXFs.
2. I bing those MXFs into an Avid bin, but see they have very limited metadata.
3. There is an ALE in the folder with the test clips that I see has tons of metadata. I try to merge it with the HD clips in the HD project, but I get this message: Cannot import this shot log because it is >HD and you are not in an >HD project
So, I have a few guestions about this.
A. Why does this metadata not appear to be in the original ProRes clips themselves? (I saw nothing, when I ama'ed them in Avid)
B. Where does this ALE get created? Does the Arri Camera spit it out?
C. Do I bring the ALE into Resolve somehow?
D. How do I get the 2K (and beyond) metadata onto the HD transcodes?
Thanks.
What metadata are you expecting thats missing?
Don't forget some of the metadata won't be relevant bcause you have transcoded.
As long as the clipsm have enough metadata to allow a re-link to the original source clips later thats normally all you need.

Thanks, Pat. There is tons of missing metadata, related to the camera, including exposure, lens sizes, shutter angle, camera model etc. Some productions want that for VFX purposes.
This would be a great question for Michael Phillips at http://24p.com/wordpress/.

Can you AMA those sources direct in to MC? Do you see the metadata then?
I suspect its getting them into Resolve that is the issue. If they are .mov files they can't hold much metadata.
In MC an AMA link to a structure that knows how to deal with source files and seperate metadata knows how to merge them. I'd guess resolve has to do the same and isn't.
I see Resolve has an option to import metadata into the media pool under the file menu. Maybe try that?

LOL. Michael is trying to help me with the issue on facebook

No. AMA'ing original files directly into Media Composer doesn't show any more metadata. Interesting what you say about quicktimes not being able to store too much metadata. I somehow suspected that the ALE might be a sidecar file that the Arri Mini creates.

Unfortunately, that command won't recognise ALE files

Thanks, Pat. I'll check it out.
This is quite a common workflow.
I drop the mxf files created by resolve into Avid, and allow Avid to scan the drive. I then import the ale into a bin in Avid, and relink all the files. Remember to deselect the "relink only to media from current project"! hey presto you now get all your media with all the metadata

Thanks, Job. Unfortunately, I had to abandon this approach, because I was getting this message when attempting to merge the camera ale (footage shot at 3200x1800, I believe) with the HD transcodes in the Avid bin: "Cannot import this shot log because it is >HD and you are no in an >HD project" People suggested altering a header in the ale with BBEdit, but it wasn't working as they had suggested and I was running out of time. I think Michael wrote another article where he was addressing this exact problem, but I didn't have time to explore it. In the end, we decided this camera metadata wasn't important to the edit, so just we let it go. I'll try to figure this out when I get a chance. Thanks again.
