Am new to Avid, moved from FCP. I have been given the into mxf converted files from the postproduction house to import them into Avid MedialFiles, MXF Folder. I found two MediaFiles, one in Applications-Avid Media Composer- SupportingFiles and one in Applications-Avid-EditorTranscode-TrasncodeService-SupportingFiles. Both Avid MediaFiles have no mxf Folder in there, only RAW andf a list of files startting with BLACK.

I have looked trough tutorials, etc. No clue. Have Avid 8.5. on iMac. Please help, if you can. Need to edit my film.

You might want to provide more info:

• System specs
• Media composer Version
• Video card
• What kind of codec/camera
• linking clips or import?
• Do the clips import or not?

The simplest thing to do, in order to know exactly where to put the files, is to do something like like create a new title, or use the Audio Tool to create tone media.  When you do that, it will force Avid to generate a new Avid MediaFiles folder in the right place if one doesn't exist yet.

When Avid creates it, it'll be in line with the "rules" - the folder must always be located at the ROOT of the drive that you use as a media drive.  The structure ALWAYS begins exactly like this, where spelling, capitalization, and spaces count:

Drivename/Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1

Note the space in "Avid MediaFiles", and note the capitalization of "Avid MediaFiles".

"Drivename" is whatever your drive is named.  I'm just using it to illustrate where the Avid MediaFiles folder is located.

"1" can be any number - but Avid automatically creates "1" first.  As it fills, it creates "2" and so forth.  For the folder they gave you - is it a numbered folder?  You can re-number it to whatever you like, so it's easily separated from anything else you create.

Once you have the media files in the right place, Avid will be able to find your media, using the Media Tool.  From there, you can select the media and drag it into a bin.

This is barely scratching the surface of exactly how Avid media management works.  I'm sure others will chime in.

That's why the pphouse converted them imto mxf files with a .aaf on top and that I should go to MediFiles-mxf and creat a folder with just a number and that drag the mxf files into this numbers folder. Then they will apear on the right bin in MC.

I do not import files from the camera directly, I have been given exactly these files to work with and then later in the pp, during colourgradin and titling, the pp-person can access the original files for the DCP.

Avid creates a new MXF folder (1) when is 5000 files, the next will be 2 with a series of 5001 files in it. When I import files MC does the job alone, we dont know where mxf files are going unless you Reveal file from right click mouse. MXF files are createed automatacly-

And how to creat tone media? Audio tool/ PH / create tone media.

You have two Avid MediaFiles folders? Are these each on different hard drives?  If they are valid Avid created folders BOTH of them will have an MXF folder in them. Also each MXF folder will have a 1 folder in it. 

Are you on a Mac? (or Windows?)

 

 

No - those two folders are the ones referred to in the original message.  Those are Avid system folders / "SupportingFiles" that should not be touched by end-users.

To create tone media as a quick way to create an Avid MediaFiles folder - at the top of the Timeline window, there are audio meters.  To the right of that, there's a button that becomes a menu for the meters.  Last option in there is "Create Tone Media."  Pick the target drive where you want to create it, and it'll automatically force Avid to create the folder." (EDIT: Christian's way in the Audio Tool does exactly the same thing!)

From there, you can move your MXF files into that newly-created MXF folder.  Once they're there, indeed, you will NOT need to link or import.  Avid's database will pick them up, and they should come online if you open up the bin.

The reason there is no folder yet is because you've never used Avid before on that system.  The moment you create any media at all, the folder gets created.
