I have a direct message from support that this has been reproduced, that there is no work around, that it is classed as a major bug, and that they are working on a solution in an upcoming release. I'll see about getting a tracking number.
Dave S.
Hi Dave, In a post you made on Jan 6th, you gavce the tracking number: regarding the HDV Capture issue.
"MCCET-1036 - Unable to select Host-1394 in HD project types.
I don't know if there might be more to it than this, however wanted to bring this tracking number up for you.
Rich
Thanks for that. Let's ask Avid where they are on this defect.

For the 8.2 version as well, hopefully.
Using MC 23.12. Win 22H2 Avid FX6.4, Vegas Pro 20/ DVD Architect 6pro, DVDit6.4proHD, CCE Basic, TmpGe Express4, TmpGe Authoring Works 4, DVDLab-Studio. Sony EX-1R, Canon XH-A1, GL2, GL1, Canon EOS 60D
You probably won't see it in the 8.2 version.
Looks like I'm to remain with 7,* then.
Not sure if this is helpful or just a waste of time but his very old freeware use to work for me when capturing DV and HDV streams.. the max I ever captured was 720P25 using it and it was only originally designed for SD but I have a feeling it doesn't care about raster size or anything else - it just detects the streams. Anyway if someone tests it and finds it doesn't work just note it...

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.
Well 8.5.1 has just been released and looks like they didn't manage to fix this bug as yet as it's not listed in the readme (MCCNET-1036). Maybe it finally will in 8.5.2?
A PARTIAL SOLUTION / EXPLANATION!!
I now know why some users are not seeing this issue, while the rest of us are. I installed a Black Magic Intensity Pro 4K today to use for video monitoring to a UHD TV, as well as for analog I/O. Previously I was using the pass-thru on my camera to convert from analog to digital and send it down the firewire port.
After installing the BM card, I went to the MC capture tool to test the Intensity, and lo and behold there was the firewire port! The problem is in how the capture devices are being enumerated by MC.
I was not really expecting to see the actual fix in 8.5.1; I think we'll see it in 8.5.2.
Ah..resurection day! Until this one get's sorted out, my answer is HDV SPLIT! Sorry, but this history of trouble-shooting with firewire capture is just not worth it.

Do you need the hardware connected for this to work or just the drivers installed?

It is a shame that bug stil exist in Media Composer 8.5.1 !
I install Windows 10 with Media Composer 8.5, and my Sony HDV Camcorder (HDR-HC7E) doesn't work with the capture tool !!! :-(
I hope they will fix this in 8.5.2...
I think it likely that we'll see a fix in 8.5.2.
There may be a work around. After installing the BMD Intensity Pro 4K card and software, my firewire port showed up. You might want to try and install the drivers, just to see if it works for you (it's uncertain as I don't know that the drivers will load without a card installed, but it's worth a try). The install can be found at:

Same bug ! Camcorder seen as Generic DVDevice-PAL and impossible to select Video in Capture Tool. Even if i just try to digitize A1 and A2 i have the message : Exception : ADM_DIO_ERROR_OCCURED, DIOerr : No input signal present. And in Media Creation / Capture / Video Resolution : only AVC-Intra 100 MXF and J2K 1080i 50 MXF --> no more : HDV 1080i (1080i/50).
