Problem importing .mp4 from sony A7R II in MC8.4

    Hi

    I need some help here.

I shot with A7R II in 4K mp4 and the final project is going tobe in HD.

What is the best way to import the mp4.  so far MC8.4 tells me wrong format.  Do I need to transcode everything trhough squeeze or an othe 3rd party software before being able to import the files.

    Thanks  a lot

Yes. Because it shoots in the XAVC-S format and Avid doesn't support that format. XAVC-I, yes, but the -S version of that codec, no.  So you'll have to use something like EditReady to convert to Quicktime DNxHR first...then Fast import or AMA LInk and consolidate.

Yes.  It actually does what it says.  Can't say the same for Brorsoft and other names for the same program that sometimes post here and claim that "they've found a solution!"

1- The workflow with squeeze 10 is a bit different but would you suggest it?

2- My understanding is that since I will have to transcode the 4K files, I will have to use them in an HD project and loose the advantgaes for eventual cropping except if I crop them during the transcode"

Squeeze 10 can handle larger than HD so just transcode to the origin size , then ama link to Avid and use Frameflex to resize

Would you make DNXHD 145? or an other format?

With Edit ready, what would be the best option to transcode an mp4 - 4K

When I try DNxHD, I do have a message error.

    Thanks

DNxHD is , as per description in it´s name , HD only .

If you want larger than HD , Squeeze 10 Pro can export directly to DNxHR , Avids codec for larger than HD.

What other apps can do with 4k is out of my knowledge, maybe a highspeed mp4 with a x264 codec could be a choice

Re: Problem importing .mp4 from sony A7R II in MC8.4

I am trying the full version of Edit ready.  But for some reason it doesn't work: could not prepare encoder for this output file.

    The file is a mp4 from a A7RII in 4K

and I try to transcode it to DNxHD  with a resize option

    Any idea?

    Thanks

As said , I´ve no idea what Edit Ready can do , if Shane is correct in his post above it should be able to handle DNxHR directly and if so no need for downscaling

Are you dragging the individual files? Try dragging the whole card.  I'll have to see if I have a sample of footage from that camera, I think someone gave me some.  And I can test.  If you want, I can point the developer to this post.'

Take a look at the Custom settings in Edit Ready to find DNxHR and other codecs.

Hi there - I 'm one of the developers of EditReady.  (thanks to Shane for tipping us off to this thread).

In EditReady, first pick the DNxHD mode you want.  Then you'll want to click the "Edit" button next to "Additional Options" to add the frame resizing control.  Pick your frame size, and then you'll need to pick the way in which it scales.  Since DNxHD requires exactly 1920x1080, you should pick "dest size (pad)" to make sure the resolution is exactly right.

Alternatively, you can definitely got to DNxHR if you're on a new enough version of MC to support that.  We don't ship EditReady with presets for DNxHR, but if you select the "custom" preset, you can pick whichever DNxHR mode (And then save it as a new preset, under the batch menu).

Another option I use when incorporating 4K XAVC-s footage is to export the camera files in Edit Ready to a 4K .mov file, then link via AMA in MC so that, in an HD timeline, you can resize the 4K image to your liking in MC, then Transcode that timeline.
