As Apple has released El Capitan this week, I strongly recommend all Mac users download the OS from the App Store now, but DO NOT INSTALL IT. After the download is complete, the installer will launch which you can force quit. You'll then find an application called "Install OS X El Capitan" in your Applications folder. Save it for future use.
No Avid products support OS X 10.11 at this time, so please do not install it unless you want to beta test for yourself.
With the base version in hand, you will be able to download any Combo update to install an Avid-qualified OS. Once 10.11.1 comes out, that will be the only version available from the App Store.

Is there a reason AVID is so behind on updating their software? I'm still dealing with major bugs on OS 10.10.3. My Avid crashes pretty much every time I try to match frame a clip, which is a major issue when trying to edit a feature film.
A thread has been started here, and we haven't heard anything yet from AVID and it's been going on for awhile.

I thought one of the reasons of switching to a subscription model was to allow AVID to catch up on software releases, but instead buggier versions are released that aren't fully tested. I understand it's very difficult to catch all the bugs, but match framing crashes is a very big thing to miss. And Adobe, Blackmagic, and FCPX seem to stay consistent on updating their software to stay current with OSX releases.
AVID, I love you so much, for so many reasons, but having to keep my computers hidden from updates so AVID works properly is a major pain. Please catch up, you're losing customers every day.
You realize that you're preaching to the choir? Avid hosts and supports this Forum but it shouldn't be construed as a conduit to management.
For better or worse, Avid doesn't qualify a OSX release until it's released publicly. Why? Things change in betas. It's like chasing a moving target. I'm not defending or advocating a policy, just passing along the info.
In regards to your issue about matchframe problems, I've answered that in the other post about that is specific to that subject where you also expressed your feelings.
Must think of something clever to go here...
I do realize I'm preaching to the choir, but hey, at least this triggered a response in the other thread!
I get that betas change, but other companies seem to be updating their editing software just fine, without major bugs popping up in every version. I haven't had a stable version of Media Composer on ANY of my systems for a couple of years now.
Thanks for taking a look at the match frame issue. Hopefully this gets resolved before I finish cutting my feature.
Where's the LIKE button on this thing...?
Marianna:As Kevin stated, do NOT upgrade to El Capitan! Additional info to support the post above located in the following Knowledge base article: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/compatibility/Mac-OS-X-10-11-El-Capitan-support-for-Media-Composer-Pro-Tools-Sibelius-EUCON-and-ISIS OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) is not supported at this time with any MC versions Known Issues: 1. Unpredictable GUI performance issues such as slowness opening and closing windows or bins. 2. Other GUI issues like black flashing during window resizing, GUI artifacts, and application messages taking a long time to appear and disappear. 3. Crashing when working in Frame View mode. I suggest everyone on a Mac subscribe to the Knowledge base article above and you will be updated vua email each time changes are made to the document so you know when and if we approve it. Go to the article directly. Under Tools you will see: Email Print Subscribe Select Subscribe Enter your first and last name and email address. Again, when any changes are made to this document relating to Mac OS X El Capitan support you will be notifed. Thanks all. Marianna
Hello Video Community,
You will from us when the El Capitan version of Apple will be available/compatible for Media Composer.
Have a great weekend everyone!
PSA: El Capitan no longer has RAID support in Disk Utility.

Command line? Yes. From a GUI? No.
Kind of a big deal. I think Apple will reconsider it, though.
So, again, don't install El Capitan. (For now.)

Also, Apple is working hard on the 10.11.1 version to fix some serious bugs they introducend. I hope Avid don't bother with the first release and concentrate on having MC working fine with the next update of El Capitan.

Hello Pierreh,
I apologize for the hassle. This is noted and we will be doing our best to provide further updates with El Capitan.

This is why it is CRITICAL to download NOW if you haven't already. If you wait until 10.11.1 comes out, you won't have access to the base version from the App Store anymore. If you have the base version, you will always be able to upgrade to whatever point release Avid supports in the future. Without it, you're stuck at the current version, which may not yet be approved.
Thank you Kevin for this critical reminder.
Could you direct me to a step by step tutorial for partitioning a trash can mac currently running 10.9.2 and MC 7.0.3 (for Phrase Find functionality) to allow for a dual boot to include the OS 10.10.x and MC 8.4.x ?
Thanks in advance.

Unless you can find a utility to do a "soft" partition, I would clone your current configuration (using something like Carbon Copy Cloner) then erase and parition your disk into two partitions using disk utility. Clone your current config back (I'm assuming that's your Mavericks/MC v7 parition), then install Yosemite and the latest version of MC on the other one.
You can hold down the option key on boot up and select from the two boot paritions, or use Startup Disk in System Preferences to switch to the other drive.
But, I would also be making regular backups of both; since they are both the same disk, if you have a physical drive failure, you lose your ability to use either system. Having two physical HDs eliminates that problem.
Excellent advice. Will the Avid MC load from a dedicated external HD if the computer is booted ( opt D) from the external drive?
It will if it's installed on the drive you boot from.
