Hi All
I am using an imac 3.5 ghz i7 chip with 32 gig memory running MC 6.5.4 and 7.0.3 on two identical machines. We get what I will refer to as "tearing" or "banding" on playback full screen. That is slight horizantal distortion, very low level. My monitor is connected by thunderbolt to the mac but I get it no matter which i use for the playback monitor. I do not think it is the speed of the monitors but rather there interpretation of the Avid MC signal. Someone explained it (in a way I can barely remember) that Avid sends out half a signal which is combined by the video card or Mojo. I am sure I amnot even close in my explanation.
Since I can only use the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 780M 4096 MB card which is fully sanctioned by avid what can I do to smooth out the picture ? Like I said it is a low level banding or tearing of the video picture. Any thoughts ? I would prefer not to spend thousands rather hundreds for what I imagine will be some outboard solution.
Thanks
Gary
Is your media Interlaced? If so, using Full-Screen Playback with 'display both fields' selected in the Full-Screen Playback settings will produce the sort of effect you describe.
It's because a computer monitor is driven as though the signal is Progressive, so if the signal is actually interlaced both fields are displayed together instead of sequentially.
As you mention, using a Mojo (or indeed any other I/O box) sorts this out, as they are able to output the signal one field at a time to a TV monitor.
Hi
It isnt interlacep it is all progressive. I know what interlaced looks likes. Thanks. This is just a periodical regulrly occuring horizontal banding sort of thing. This likely comes from something missing in play out from the avid
Sounds like a sync mismatch between the display and the playback.
Have you tried the console command MONCON off

Not moncon been there done that thanks though. It has more to do with the way Avid puts out video signal I think. Solution I imagine lies in an putboard thing liek a mojo or something cheaper I hope.
Make sure to select "Flip on Vertical Sync" in the Full Screen Display setting. That should fix the tearing.
Must think of something clever to go here...

In full screen playback yopu aren't outputting video. you can only output video with output hardware.
in FSP you are emulating playback via your display drivers which is why it can get complicated.
FSP isn't designed to replace a proper output and control of levels and calibration is almost impossible.
