Hi there!
I just upgraded from version 7.x to 8.3 and have been scratching my head while searching though the settings and the forums for an answer to this question:
Is there a way to lasso a set of clips without selecting all that filler?
I usually alt-lassoed (or just click-dragged from off the timeline) and around the clips I wanted before moving them... but now it seems to select the filler from every track as well! Sure, I can start my lasso ON one of those clips, but that usually doesn't include a title on an upper layer or whatnot...
Am I missing something here?
Okay, there must be an option or a keyboard shortcut i'm missing here...
For some reason, I was able to edit all day yesterday with my lasso tool NOT selecting the filler (like all the previous version of Avid) ...and now this morning, it's back to behaving the same way as before, grabbing all the filler and confusing the heck out of me!
Isn't there anyone here who khows to use the new lasso tool who could help me out??
Okay, here we go! Finally found it (!!)
For some reason, enabling/dissabling the keyframe toggle on the timeline switches from one lasso mode to annother...
SAY WHAT !?!
Yup. Keyframes = lasso... (??)
Ouch.
Not in front of a V8 currently but isn't there a new setting that allows selection of filler or not?
Composer or timeline setting maybe?

Yes, there is such a setting (in Timeline Settings/Edit/Select Filler with Segement Tools)
But, as the name implies, it only applies to the segment tools, not the lasso...
when I unchecked the "select filler with segment tool" and did a alt lasso I was able to select only the clips, no filler...
Then your keyframe mode (in the smart tool) is probably enabled... And the checked/unchecked setting has no effect whatsoever.
At least, that's the way it is on my version 8.3
Correction: I'm talking about the filler AROUND the clips, BEFORE, AFTER, ABOVE and BELOW (not in between two clips - that one IS affected by the checked/unchecked setting) sorry...
Since V8, Media Composer has a new option that mimics Newscutter lassoing behavior. It is found in the Timeline settings -> Edit -> "Lassoing enters:" (choice of Trim or Segment mode). When you select Segment Mode AND when the Keyframe mode is off, lassoing a clip should select it both instantly and without the need to select all around the entire clip.
When you select "Trim Mode", the selected will will be highlighted only when you release the mouse button and only when you lasso all around the clip in a left to right direction. This is the classic Media Composer behavior.
One thing that is NOT what Newscutter used to do is filler selection. Filler used to be ignored by the lasso. To me, this is a bug, since we never want to select Filler when lassoing. I think I'm gonna fill-up a bug report on that one. Or did I just do it? ;-)
IM on 8.2 didn't jump to 8.3. Works fine when keyframe is enabled or disabled unless Im miss understanding. Strange

I'm still on 8.2 too. Which settings are you using for "Lassoing enters:" ? The filler selection "bug" happens if it is set to Segment Mode.
When "select filler with segment tools" is checked then yes filler is added in lasso. when unchecked it doesn't. I have red and yellow mode selected on my smart tool. I came from a different NLE so Im use to working like that. When both modes are activated or deactivated in the smart tool it still does not select filler when "select filler with segment tools" is unchecked but I have notice that the yellow splice in mode becomes active in the smart tool

Yes, but selecting "Lassoing enters: Segment mode" in the settings seems to be unrelated to the "Select filler with segment tools".

So far unchecking was the solution for my most affective way of working with lassoing clips. But now another function I use logicly doesn't work anymore - making to cuts into the topmost empty space in a track, mark the space between the cuts and place an effect into it by dobble-clicking the effect icon.
So, what do I do now? - check the box again.
Knock, knock Avid - wouldn't it be great to have both options? hint hint ;-)
