MX02 Mini just died, this could be good news . . .

After about 5 or 6 years of use, my MX02 Mini Max seems to be on the blink - litterally. The red light is flashing and there is no signal. I think it has died. As i have been extremely disappointed with the sluggish, stuttering performance combination with MC V6.0 onwards, I see this as potentially good news. For years I used to always be on the current version of MC but this has been the main reason I have not botherd to stay current and upgrade to V6.5 or 7. What's the point? A few new features but year after year the same stuttering problem continues. A lot of the time I disengage the Mini and enjoy MC the way it should be, but I do need HD monitoring, so I have persevered with it, even have looked at FCPX as an alternative on some jobs - at least it's responsive in a way MC has not been in years (Take note Avid!)

So now, the question is . . . what should I replace it with. I know there is a bunch of new boxes out there with thunderbolt support etc. I anticipate continuing with my current Mac Pro for quite a while, so the the thunderbolt thing is not that big, but I guess it is important to have an eye on the future as things are very rapidly heading that way and someday soon most of us will end up with a big, black cylinder on our desktops with thunderbolt everything . . .

So what would you reccomend for someone who mostly does TVC's and corporate work and does not need SDI or other broadcast connections, bit most of all is RESPONSIVE and 100% works with MC without any stuttering or lag . . .

Much appreciate all thoughts and advice Big Smile

    Hi,

I have an Aja I/O express and a Kona 3 that I bought second hand.

    Both perform flawlessly.

Perhaps pick up a S/h Kona 3 to use until you shell out for the black wastebin when you will need thunderbolt i/o.

Agree on an eBay Kona 3.  It is a tank.

Thanks David and Jeff, does it need to go in any particular slot in the MP . . ? Also, I guess I would need to buy an SDI to HDMI converter . . . and it definitely solves the sluggish scrolling and general sluggish response of the interface? No lag?

The only major issue is that it eliminates any opportunity to be mobile with my MBP - that might be a deal breaker . . .

Mobile? Then I/o Express. Sometimes seen on E-bay, but pricier.

(-If the MBP has an express slot)

That will also give you HDMI, but your monitor will probably be happy with RGB from a Kona, which is how I feed the Panny.

(HDMI clips sub blacks so setting up with pluge is not possible)

I was looking at the IO Express - someone was selling one recently, as well as a Matrox Mini. When I asked about lag and responsiveness of the interface, he said they were equally as bad, with the Matrox slightly better... So I stuck to my Matrox.

But would be happy to hear other opinions.

It seems that a lot of the slugginess of those third party boxes also comes from Media Composer deals with Open i/o and the way it sends info frame by frame. Someone with insider knowledge might chime in and give us more technical explanations.

I bought that Kona 3 and it's shipping now, hopefully it will be a goody. I'm currently using a 21" 1080 computer monitor so may have to look into either one that has RGB inputs or a converter of some kind.

Did you get the break out panel?

A BM HDlink HDSDi to HDMI box has worked well here for about 6 years now. Only problem was their power supply and flimsy connector to the unit. Hardwiring a different power supply solved that

Thanks Andrew, no breakout panel, it's basically just for monitoring only. Do you have a link for that BM product. I had a quick look at the site and couldn't see it . . .

Your seller is wrong. For me as a owner of Macbook Pro the largest lag in Avid 6.5 was with Matrox Mini which a have since Avid 5.0.

When I tried on Mac pro Blackmagic Intencity Pro the lag was little slighter. But with AJA Io Express my Avid is flying!!!

I have selled my Matrox with without hesitation. As I know the smallest lag only on AJA devices.

Thanks Andrew, I picked one up today from Protel in Auckland - should arrive on Monday. What's the deal with audio? I guess it's sourced from the MacPro minijack . . ?

Installed the Kona 3 card was easy enough but the sluggishness remains as it did with the MX02 Mini. This is very dissapointing . . .

An even bigger disappointment is that the Kona 3 card appears to have some pretty severe chroma tearing and is no good. So much for E-Bay purchases. I guess I should have known better . . .
