I am on Mac OS 10.8.3 and am using the latest version of Firefox.

I purchased the Media Composer 6.5 upgrade from pro-6.0.  (I have 5.5 that I have uninstalled.)

First I had to go through the bother of installing a Java plug-in.  Then I spent about an hour downloading the four files for the Macintosh.  I thought it was odd that these appeared to be document files (the largest is 2.2 GB) instead of .dmg or .pkg files.  I uninstalled version 5.5.  I tried clicking on the downloaded files, but they are NOT executable files.

When I return to the website and click on "Download and Register My Products" (or something to that effect), I am asked for my access ID.  If I copy and paste any of the access IDs that were emailed to me, I get an error.  When I try to access technical assistance, I am asked for my Avid user name (email address) and password and they don't work in that damned screen.

I have been installing software packages for many years--including digital downloads--and never have I been through such a ridiculously futile and frustrating experience. I am very close to demanding a refund.

How do I get this *** to work?

It's not clear which entry point on their website you're using, but this will work.

1) Register your product here ... https://www.avid.com/us/support/register/video (it may take an hour for the registration to propagate through Avid's servers)

2) You may need to create a Download Center Account.

3) Download MC v6.5.2.1 here ... https://www.avid.com/us/support/downloads (go straight to Avid Editor Patches.  MC v6.5.2.1 is a full installer)

Instead of using the link from your "my account" area, go to the download center and download the 6.5.2.1 patch from the "Avid Editor Patches" link you'll find there. On the Mac side of the house, every install, whether a new version, an update or a patch, is treated as a "full install" requiring the complete uninstall of your current version. Be sure to use the uninstaller file you'll find in your applications folder.

I got a reply from Avid Customer Satisfaction that said I could use the files I downloaded last night, but I had to append .dmg to them.  This worked for the largest file and I was able to install MC 6.5.2.  However, it did not work for Avid DVD, Avid FX or Squeeze. When I double-click on those after appending the .dmg, I get an "unrecognized" error.

Nothing will work with Avid DVD for you - It is a PC only application.

The other 2 can be installed on a MAC.
However someone else will have to help you out there as I am also PC only

Thank you for saving me some time, sir.  I re-downloaded the disk image files for the first two applications and successfully installed them.  I was about to try downloading Avid DVD when I saw your email warming me that the app was for Windows only.  Thanks.
