MacPro: upgrading graphics card to Quadro 4000

    Hi there!

I have a quadcore (Xeon 2.8 Ghz, 12 Gb RAM) MacPro 5.1 computer with Nitris DX running Symphony 6.0. When doing colour corrections, the system gets very sluggish - each adjustment I do in CC mode happens with quite a delay and obviously with lots of effort for the computer. I've read that MC/Symphony supports Quadro 2000/4000 graphics cards as accelerators. Would chainging graphics card to Quadro 4000 help Symphony to run faster? Now I have ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB (a card that came with the computer).

    Thanks!

I do not THINK, you will see much improvement with the 4000.(someone with actual experience may like to put me straight)

If it is just for GPU I believe there are much faster and much cheaper cards for the Mac (much discussed in the Resolve Community) I have the 4000 in a 2008 MacPro but Avid not happy on that computer as it also has a Decklink card installed.

FWIW If you can stand to work in half yellow half green output. I have found MC and Symphony's CC much more responsive in that mode and use it for a first pass to get close.

On a Mac, ACPL effects are disable on the Symphony/MC. There is a now long standing bug in OS X that Apple refuses to fix. Avid is trying to engineer around this but it's difficult without the fix coming from Apple. Because of this, you will not see any specific improvement with a Quadro card. The focus has been to take advantage of the Multiprocessor CPU.

BCC and AvidFX do have specific ACPL effects/filters that can take advantage of the Quadro Card.

An option to improve the playback is to use the Playlength button. It can help when working with long projects like this.

However the Quadro 4000 is at least compatible with a Mac Symphony 6.5 so if I could get GPU accleration with it for another application on my system that Might make it worthwhile?

Her main editing system is running AVID Symphony8.5. This system is running on an Intel Pro Mac -12 Core - 32gigs Ram - on a Samsung Pro 850 SSD Card... [view my complete system specs]
